Part 2 SCREENING ROOM ® © 0 0 0 © By John Foote This week, we continue with a preview of films due for release in the coming months, and Hollywood buzz on what's behind the scenes. QUILLS ... Based on the last decade in the life of the Marquis de Sade, the film explores the mad writers obsession with sex and sexual writings. A priest is sent to meet with de Sade, and the two become locked in a battle of wills in a debate over morality and sin. Geoffrey Rush is cast as the Marquis, with Kate Winslet, Michael Caine, and Joaquin Phoenix in supporting roles. Directed by the vastly under appreciated Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff: 1983, Henry and June; 1990). SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE ...this film eamed rave reviews at Cannes. The film tells the story of the making of the great German expressionistic vampire film Nosferatu (1920), focusing on the actor Max Schreck's belief he really was a vampire. "John Malkovich is wonderful as director FW. Murnau, and Willem Dafoe is the twisted actor obsessed with blood sucking. PAT IT FORWARD ... Combining the tal- ents of two Oscar winners, Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt, and a recent Oscar nomi- nee, Haley Joel Osment ("...I see dead peo- ple ...") this new picture appears to be a feel good film about the impact a child has on the lives of those around him when he cre- ates a good deed. Insiders are saying the film is uneven and difficult to follow, but the print they are watching is not a final cut. The cast alone makes it worth seeing, and direc- tor Mimi Leder's last film was the terrific dis- aster film Deep Impact (1998). 13 DAYS ... Word on this film is so strong, insiders are already calling it a lock for an Oscar nomination for best picture and could be just the thing to revive the all but dead career of Kevin Costner. The picture explores the nightmarish 13 days that were the Cuban Missile Crisis with Costner cast as Chief of Staff Kenneth O'Donnell, and Canadian actor Bruce Greenwood (The Sweet Hereafter, 1997) said to be uncanny as JFK. Director by Roger Donaldson who helmed the fine political thriller No Way Out (1987) also starring Costner. THE ROAD TO GLORY ... also in the Special Presentation Program at the Toronto Film Festival, though this picture does not at this writing have a distribution deal in place. Robert Duvall portrays a crusty Scottish coach who guides a team of misfits to the national championship." Co-stars include Michael Keaton and soccer star Alley McCoist, but let's face it, the film belongs to Duvall. THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE ... Robert Redford directs this film adaptation of the well reviewed novel. Matt Damon is a World War | hero asked to play two of the greatest golfers of that age to open a new golf course. Helping him find his game after years at war is his mysterious caddy, played by Will Smith, who offers golf advice that is profound life advice as well. Redford is an Oscar winning director who has a proven track record and can indeed deliver. RED PLANET .. The total failure of Mission to Mars (2000) must have been sweet music to Wamer Brothers who will release their own Mars epic this fall. The film explores colonization on the red planet in the not so distant future as life on earth becomes impossible. The powerhouse cast includes Val Kilmer, Terence Stamp, and Tom Sizemore. THE PLEDGE ... Jack Nicholson reunites with director Sean Penn for a 50s murder mystery in which Nicholson portrays a beat- en down cop trying to solve a case. This is Nicholson's first film since winning the Oscar for As Good As It Gets (1997) so expecta- tions, to say the least, are rather high. Count on attention given to Nicholson's perfor- mance, which is said to be Oscar worthy. - MOULIN ROUGE ... Baz Luhrmann's wild adaptation of Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo de Caprio was a huge success because of the manner in which the director modemized the famous tale. Here he sets his biography of artist Lautrec in the proper period, but the song score is chocked full of Madonna and pop tunes. Nicole Kidman makes seeing this film a must because | believe at some point she will be recog- nized for the stunning talent she is. NURSE BETTY .. is the first major release of the fall, opening in early September after premiering at Cannes earning rave reviews for the performances of Renee Zellwegger and the great Morgan Freeman. After witnessing her husband's murder, a troubled young woman is pur- sued by the hit man who becomes fascinat- ed with her retreat into a fantasy world of soap opera television. Zellwegger, best known for her role in Jerry Maguire (1996), is rumoured to be an Oscar contender here, cast in a role virtually every young actress in the business wanted. 3,000 MILES TO GRACELAND ... teams Kevin Costner with Kurt Russell as crooks that plan a major heist during an Elvis impersonator convention in Las Vegas. Russell portrayed the legendary rock star in a TV bio in 1980 delivering an uncanny per- formance that eamed him acclaim in the business. Costner looks outright goofy in the Elvis get-up, but this is a comedy ... right? CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAG- ON ... takes the great Ang Lee back to his Chinese roots, his first film in Mandarin in years. | had the pleasure of interviewing Ang Lee last year for his brilliant Civil War epic Ride with the Devil (1999) and was quite taken with his quiet genius. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is apparently a com- ..bination of drama, martial arts action and a love story. BEAUTIFUL ... directed by Academy Award winner Sally Field, explores the wild goings on within the beauty pageant circuit as a young woman strives to be Miss America. Field assembled a strong cast including Kathleen Turner, Minnie Driver and that annoying Pepsi kid Halie Kate Eisenberg for this, which has been earning strong, but quiet buzz. DRACULA 2000 ... is likely not a film we need, but one we are getting nonetheless. An update, with the only notable actor being Christopher Plummer who was robbed of an Oscar nomination last year for his Mike Wallace in The Insider. IT'S MORE THAN A MARKET!
