"WEEKEND STAR" Te FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2000-19 Green and white open new season against Georgina on Sept. 23 From Page 18 Little Britain; and Sept. 17, Little Britain at Port Perry. The MoJack regular season "home open- er" will be Sept. 23 against the Georgina Ice, the team that dumped them the play- offs last spring. Game time at the Scugog Arena is 7:30 p.m. Another major change for the six teams in the Central Jr. C League this season is the elimination of interlocking games against teams from the Empire (Eastern) League. Mr. Parliament said team officials felt travel to the eastern communities was too costly in these days where budgets are stretched to the maximum already. Doing away with the interlocking games means the teams in the Central loop will meet each other eight times (four home and four away). Mr. Parliament said he believes this will help build some intense rivalries on the ice, and with just four of the six clubs making the playoff round in the spring, every game in the regular sea- son takes on new importance. "With teams fighting for a playoff berth or looking to move up a notch in the stand- ings, every game is practically a 'four- pointer," he said. - The MoJacks mailed out some 40 invi- tations over the summer, asking players to come out for training camp, and there have been several 'walk-ons' as well, said the general manager. About half a dozen players from an all- Ontario Midget squad last season from Teen Packs "Back-To-School Special | Back-To-School Special Magic Tape Girls & Guys gic Brand 2 Ply Orono showed up at camp, and proved to be a pleasant surprise to team officials. As well, a dozen players from last year's MoJack team are in camp, including veter- an netminder Jeff Mackie, a Central Jr. League all-star last season. But his back- up, Port Perry native Ryan Fraser, is not out for camp. Apparently, he has put away his pads this year to concentrate on his future as a baseball pitcher. Other veterans returning include high- scoring forwards Adam Jones and Shane Norton and defensemen Darryl Forbes and Jeff Ashton. In an effort to cut down on head injuries this year, refs will be dealing strictly with any stick, elbow and forearm contact to the head area, handing out two- or five- minute penalties depending on the sever- ity of the contact. The Lakefield Chiefs appear to be "the team to beat" in the Central Jr. C League again this season, said Mr. Parliament. The Chiefs, who lost just once in regular play last year, went on to win the All- Ontario championship four games to two over the Belle River Canadiens. Early word is that they are apparently losing just a handful of players from that powerful team of a year ago. Mr. Parliament said it will be at least a week before the MoJacks start inking play- ers to cards. He said the coaching staff wants to give all training camp hopefuls a look in pre-season games before they start making their selections.
