Phone (905) 852-9498 Coppins Corner's Matthew Binns, 15, is making quite a name for himself in the RACE Motorcycle Series By Chris Hall Weekend Star A Coppins Corner teen continues to tear up the race track this summer, grab- bing poles, winning races and setting records while he's at it. Spending the summer in the Uxbridge- area with family, 15-year-old Matthew Binns is making quite a name for himself in the RACE Motorcycle Series. - As the youngest competitor in the Series, which is open to all ages, Matthew currently leads the 125 division, and is hanging on to second place in the 250 -class. All races are held at Shannonville Motorsport Park near Belleville, where he has spent the 2000 summer rewriting the lap-record books. His latest showing, over the Aug. 12-13 weekend, saw the teen sensation win the Amateur 125 Grand Prix heat race on Saturday, while paring a second off the record lap time he turned back in May of this year. On Sunday, riding his Orillia Motorsport RD 125, young Matthew won the Amateur 125 Grand Prix and then the Pro 125 Grand Prix, where he shaved another two seconds off his record lap time. As well, he captured the checkered flag in the 250 Grand Prix, using his Orillia Motorsport RS 125 machine. During that weekend, he also took the pole position for each race he entered. There are still two races remaining in the season, with the 2000 RACE Series wrapping up at the end of September. Matthew hopes to move up full-time to the 250 class next season. Riding since the age of five, thanks to a birthday present from his wonderful uncle, Matthew began racing competi- tively when he turned eight. By the age of 12 he was tearing up go- kart tracks, and now competes at some of the largest racing tracks in Ontario, includ- ing Mosport Speedway and Shannonville. He has also raced in Quebec and down in New York State. While he will attend Grade |] at a Mississauga high school this fall, Matthew will continue to travel back to Coppins Corners on the weekend to be with family and compete. Sponsored by Wade Tindale of Orillia Motorsport and Scott Webb at Parts Canada, Matthew is also a proud sup- porter of the RCMP's Racing Against Drugs program.
