A trustee with the Durham District School Board - formerly:known as the Durham Board -zof Education - forithe past 12 years, Mrs. Drew told The Star on Tuesday that she would be filing her candidacy papers this morning. Also seeking the regional councillors seat in the Nov. 13 election is Ken Carruthers. He is currently councillor for Ward 2. Incumbent regional rep Ken Gadsden announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election. Mrs. Drew said that the leading factor in her decision to change the direction of her political career is the sweeping changes intro- duced to the education system by the provin- cial government over the past few years. "The position of trustee is to work on behalf of the constituents, and that, in effect, has been changed," she said, referring to new legislation that has limited the decision-mak- ing powers of the trustees. No longer can trustees and board officials decide what programs will be offered, and how they will be financed, said Mrs. Drew. That authority is now in the hands of the provincial government.
