After watching as the number of sports available to kids in area schools dwindle, and the population of vol- leyball soar at the same time, two local residents decided it was time to bring the game to Port Perry. "Sports have basically been eliminated at the high schools around here, and the current closest (volley- ball) clubs are in Stouffville and Orono," said Lisa Monk, who along with partner Kelly Daly, is co-ordinat- ing the Panthers club. "We felt the town warranted a volleyball club... it cer- tainly has the population and the interest for it." Both women coached in the Stouffville club last year, and opted to start up their own association in 2000. The Port Perry Panthers will welcome both boys and girls between the ages of 12 to 16. Mens and womens midget and bantam squads will be put together, each with about 10 players. The teams will be competitive, and members will be asked to attend practises about twice a week. The team will also participate in one tournament each month. Travel could take them as far as Mississauga or Ottawa.' Tryouts for the four teams will take place near the end of September. Panthers officials are currently in talks with the Durham District School Board over the availability of a Port Perry High School gymnasium. The Port Perry Baptist Church is also being consid- ered by the club. The Port Perry Panthers are also looking for corpo- rate sponsors to help with the clubs costs, including nets, balls and uniforms. "We've talked to some kids already, and they seem pretty excited," said Ms Monk. "Volleyball seems to be coming back again, picking up in popularity and people seem excited about it." Anyone interested in the Port Perry Panthers volley- ball club can contact Lisa Monk at 986-9839 or Kelly Daly at 985-3113.
