"WEEKEND STAR" LR IR BN Fr Aen Seep Ba J FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 2000 - § Sunderland man cleared on charge of threatening officer By Rik Davie Weekend Star A Sunderland area man has been acquitted of a charge of threatening a police officer. But Enzo Romagnuolo, who was also - involved in a fracas that led to the fatal shooting of his father Tony by police in December of 1998, faces further charges. His lawyer called the string of events that led to Tony Romagnuolo's death "a good example of the damage that overzealous police can cause." Joseph Bloomenfeld made the com- ments moments after a Newmarket judge found 22-year-old Lorenzo . (Enzo) Romagriuolo not guilty on charges that he made threats to a York Regional police offi- cer in 1998. Tony Romagnuolo was fatally shot the night of Dec. 28, when two York Region offi- cers, accompanied by two Durham officers, attempted to arrest Enzo on a charge of , making threats against York officer Mike * Hoskin. Justice William Wolski told the court that he accepted expert testimony given at trial that Enzo Romagnuolo "is not sophis- ticated" and "is of low intelligence." Justice Wolski also said that Const. Hoskin's actions in handling the arrest on impaired driving charges of Enzo's brother, Rocco Romagnuolo, showed the officer did not fear the threats. It was alleged that Enzo threatened:to. break the officer's legs during a phopeton" versation that occurred after RGoco been arrested for impaired df $99.00 for the whole year!!! Justice Wolski said that by going to the Romagnuolo home after the threats had been made, Const. Hoskin showed "that while he was puzzled by Enzo's utterances, he was neither fearful nor intimidated". It was the subsequent investigation of . the alleged threats that led to the shoot- ings at the Romagnuolo's home on the 17th Side Road of Brock Township a few days after Christmas. On the night of Dec. 28 police again phoned the Romagnuolo home, this time to speak to Enzo regarding the alleged threats. Later that night Const. Hoskin and York officer Randy Martin went to the home. They were accompanied by Durham Regional Police officers Al Robins and Nancy George. A scuffle broke out, and Tony Romagnuolo ended up being fatally shot. Rocco Romagnuolo was shot in the abdomen. Const. Martin sustain a bullet wound to the face. A subsequent investigation by the Special Investigations Unit resulted in Const. Martin being charged with second degree murder, while Const. Hoskin was charged with assault with a weapon and careless use of a firearm. Const. Robins was charged with assault causing bodily harm using a firearm and aggravated assault.
