35 15 ANN 3.) SAE BARRY 12 - "WEEKEND STAR" ARTZ FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2000 Society pushes awareness as Breast Cancer Month arrives Breast cancer death rates are dropping because women are being diagnosed earlier by hav- ing regular screening, according to the Canadian Cancer Society. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the C.C.S. is encourag- ing women to talk to their doctors about screening for breast cancer because screening saves lives. Every day, 53 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 15 will die of the disease. On the positive side, statistics show that breast cancer death rates have dropped by about 25 per cent among women aged 50 to 69 since 1985. "This decrease in death rates is partly due to the fact that more women are being screened and more tumors are being found at an earlier stage in devel- opment. When tumors are found early, more women will survive this disease," said John Sproule, presi- dent of the East Durham Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society. The society recom- mends that . women between 50 and 69 years should have a mammo- gram every two years in combination with physical examination of the breasts DRIVE CLEAN DRIVE CLEAN DRIVE CLEAN DRIVE CLEAN DRIVE CLEAN EEO A TO SERVE YOU! These two procedures together lead to earlier diagnosis of breast cancer and a significant improve- ment in survival. The C.C.S. recommends that, by 40 years of age, all women should practice Breast Self Examination (BSE) regularly, at the same time each month, and they should continue this practice even after menopause.
