il "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2000 - 17 ~- LETTERS - Trudeau remembered Continued from Page 6 commodity to be auctioned off to the highest bidder under the guise of efficiency. You must realize, these mer- chants of greed are only interested in the bottom line. Of course, they, as rich men and therefore shareholders, would profit handsomely from the deals, while the poor people could bloody well fend for themselves by learning to work harder. Meanwhile, they would bombard us with false advertising a-la-Mike Harris, telling us how happy we would be with less so they can have more. By the way, one last thought: if these people ever, God forbid, come to power, make sure you save each and every penny of your little tax cuts, as you're going to need them all, and then some, to pay for all the new user fees you will find yourself faced with. That's when you will real- ly wish you were back under the caring and responsible system developed by Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Rest in Peace, my Friend, you have earned your sleep. R.]. Bouffard, Port Perry Discrimination in high places To the Editor: A casual observer of school board politics would have found last Monday night's standing committee meeting quite entertaining; if not somewhat ironic. While the STAR students (Students Together Against Racism) were at the board making a presentation and being lauded for their efforts in fighting "racism" and "dis- crimination" a heated debate erupted, regarding demeaning remarks aimed at "Christians" and the board was forced to deal with their own "in-house" problems, of Trustee Drew's anti-Christian bigotry. The "students" found themselves privy to a timely object lesson on discrimination in high places. With strin- gent:measures in-place against such behaviour, the stu- dents must be waiting with bated breath to see if "board policy" is non-discriminatory. Does board policy have jurisdiction over all levels of education or does it just per- tain to students? Her resignation should be forthcoming. What kind of an example and role model does this provide for our kids? Barring age, Trustee Drew, perhaps, would better qual- ify for the student's STAR program than for Scugog's upcoming Regional Council. Marlene Hillis, Oshawa Half Marathon was blessed To The Editor We would like to take this opportunity to thank Angela Connelly and her amazing group of volunteers who con- tributed to the success of Port Perry's first Half Marathon. As I quote from Angela, "It was blessed from the start." And it was. The weather was beautiful. The runners and volunteers had a great time. Angela's enthusiasm and sense of humour made it a pleasure to work with her. All of us Big Brothers/Big Sisters want to congratulate you and thank you. Hope we can do it again next year.
