30 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2000 From page 9 becomes falsely earnest, which to me ruins the per- formance of anyone, not merely Hunt. She was terrific as the self-centered New Yorker on television's Mad About You, winning several Emmys on the way, but I think her limitations as an "actress are in abundance. The Oscar for As Good As It Gets (1997) remains a mys- tery to me, and | cannot believe that several influ- ential American critics are hyping this film for Academy Awards. Osment is fine in the role of Trevor, but there is nothing interesting about the performance as there was with him in The Sixth Sense (1999). Here he is the Christ figure, the martyr of the modern day Good Samaritan, who is all know- ing of what is happening around him. He's a fine .actor, richly deserving of the Oscar nomination he received last year for The Sixth Sense, 'but trapped here by the limitations the role offers him. It is ironic that Spacey and Hunt are trapped by their own limit- ed imaginations this time out, and Osment is cor- nered by the role. Director Leder should be ashamed of herself for this shameful work, geared only to inspire to tears from a weak-minded audience. The glory of a film like Boys Don't Cry (1999) is that emotional agonies of the characters become ours, therefore the tears spilled are real, not manufactured, as they are in this film. The same applies to a picture like The Cider House Rules (1999) where the emotions of the characters are so realistic, so natural; they become ours as they spill offscreen into the audi- ence. Why force it? Why take a hammer, as Leder has done, and pound the moment into the audience. That, along with Oscar consideration, is what the director wanted to do with this weak, sadly excessive film. GET CARTER Directed by Stephen Kay Now in theatres (BOMB!) Warner Brothers Pictures seems to be having a very rough year. In May, Battlefield Earth, John Travolta's vanity project adapted from Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's fat novel, became one of the most reviled movies in the history of modern cine- ma. How bad is this film? A spokesman at Warner tells me not to wait for the film on video, because it likely will not be released. Now comes Get Carter, a remake of the 60s cult clas- sic from Britain. The new film stars Sylvester Stallone (thank God not as a Brit), as a Vegas mobster who comes to Seattle to bury his brother after that sib- ling's death in a recent car accident. Of course, it all turns out to be so much more (of what is never established) and Stallone puts his thinking cap on and realizes somehow he is connected to the murder. DUH! Better yet, that the mur- der was a rouse to get the Vegas mobster home. ...Can you say stoooooo- pid? This lousy film is an insult to the memory .of the first, and quite frankly to all the poor souls who pay to 'Stallone should act his age, give up the tough guy act see movies. Stallone must give up on playing the tough guy, it simply does not work for him anymore. | 'mean, really, Rocky Balboa was not a tough guy and we loved him for it. His naive vulnerability made him dear to us. Those same qualities were visible in Stallone's small town police officer in Copland (1997), a really fine piece of acting in a film that is all but forgot- ten. While watching Get Carter | found myself wish- ing, praying for, and obsessing over the fact | was instead watching Rocky 6, which is rumoured to be in discussion. | could han- dle seeing Stallone as Rocky in a wheelchair bat- tling ex-boxers with cane and bedpan more than I could deal with watching Get Carter. I would have preferred to see Stallone execute the role of Hamlet rather than watch this film. Watching him as the melancholy Dane would have at least been crazy fun, which Get Carter never is. This is another Stallone 'vanity project that sees the over 50 star again terrified to act his age. One of the worst films of the year Someone tell me Michael Caine made this before he won the Oscar for The Cider House Rules (1999) because would hate to think this is the best he's being offered after that magical performance. What is he doing in this film? We have come to expect dreck like this from Stallone, but Michael Caine? Then again, Jaws 4 comes to mind...
