"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2000 - § Trial for 3 officers involved in shooting finally begins By Rik Davie Weekend Star The first week of the trial for three police officers charged in relation to the 1998 shooting death of a man near Sunderland was taken up with legal motions. Superior Court Justice Archie Campbell heard requests and motions from the three lawyers for the cops charged in the death of Tony Romagnuolo: Durham Const. Al Robins and York Regional Police officers Randy Martin and Mike Hoskins. The Crown prosecuting the case also made a number of motions at the beginning of the long-awaited trial. A media ban prevents reporting of the nature of the motions. The province's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) - which investigates police inci- dents that result in serious injury or death to civilians - laid its first ever murder charge against York Regional Police officer Randy Martin after an investigation of the events of Dec. 28, 1998. He is charged with second degree murder in the death of 44- year-old Tony Romagnuolo. Const. Mike Hoskin has been charged with careless use of a firearm and assault with a weapon. Const.-Robifis, who works out of 26 Division, has been charged with aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm in relation to the wounding of then 17-year-old Rocco Romagnuolo, Tony Romagnuolo's son. The shootings occurred after the two York Region officers, accompanied by two Durham Region cops, traveled to the Romagnuolo home on the 17th Side Road near Sunderland to investigate allegations that Lorenzo Romagnuolo had threatened a police officer in a phone conversation. A verbal and physical confrontation is alleged to have taken place that left Const. Martin with a facial wound, Tony Romagnuolo fatally wounded by at least three shots in the abdomen, and Rocco with an abdominal wound. Enzo Romagnuolo was recently acquit- ted of the threatening charges in a Newmarket court. : Jury selection is expected to begin Monday. The panel is expected to be near- ly double the size of the normal group of two hundred prospective jurors. The trial, expected by Police and legal authorities to have wide-ranging, ramifica-_ | tions, is: expected tofgke an additional five to six vieeks.
