IN yA ly 12 - "WEEKEND STAR" Sl lp SS = P| nS SHAT? OH ININY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2000 Arnie's back, and he's kickin' butt like old times From page 9 threat of going over the top, which has more than once been the complaint about Carrey. I think he does a tremen- dous job, though I wish the director had trusted his actor more and allowed something of Carrey to shine through. It is a terrific performance, but knowing now that Carrey is an actor of extraordinary talent, it would have been exciting to see what he could do with the role minus the make-up and gimmicks. The subplots that have been created for the film tend to pull focus from the storyline, but are a neces- sary tool in propelling the storyline forward. I think I could have done without many of the Whos because | began to feel like the Grinch about half way into the film. I understood why he could be so annoyed with them, but then on the other hand, I could also see how the spirit of Christmas engulfed him so he could forgive the Whos as purely as they forgive him. Is the film for kids? Well, undoubtedly they will love the outlandish visual effects, costumes, and the world of Whoville, as well as Cindy Lou Who (this time older than two), but I think Carrey's perfor- mance walks a fine line 'between being very funny and very frightening. Little kids under six perhaps should not see the film because there is an intensi- ty to it that may alarm them, to those that supported me. I have appreciated the opportunity to work for Mariposa residents these last 3 years. May the new council serve us well. Both live and silent auction items. even if it's just the treat- ment of the Grinch's dog, poor Max. Ron Howard has created what is almost a great film, the shortcoming being easy to forgive because so much of the film is wonderfully original and entertaining. But | would be untruthful in not admitting to just a twinge of disappointment that The Grinch is not a masterpiece of fantasy on the big screen. THE SIXTH DAY Directed by Roger Spottiswoode Now in theatres (See) Man, did Arnold Schwarzenegger need this film to revive his faltering career! Though far from being 183 Queen St., Port Perry I (905) 9858234 4 Q cinema art (when was a film with Ah-nold ever such?). The Sixth Day is a kick-ass action thriller in the vein of the big guy's best pictures. It brings back memories of Total Recall (1990) his wild science fiction film of 10 years ago that stunned audiences with its action sequences, visuals and twisting ptot lines. The Sixth Day (yes the title is meant to be a Biblical reference), explores what happens in the future when a man is cloned by a group of scien- tists working for an evil cor- porate maniac. Over the course of the film poor Ah- nold tries to gain back con- trol of his life, but is unable to because the man in his place, the man with his wife ... is him. It's a cool idea that works for most of the film, provided you place your brain in the fridge before going to the movie. Schwarzenegger is in great form here, playing the bewildered everyman who has had his life snatched from him as an experiment. But it turns out he was the wrong man. No one really wanted to clone him, but the thugs who tore him away from his family made a mistake, and the situation becomes deadly when assassins are sent to kill him because he is the evi- dence. Of course Amie fights for his life, and you just know he is a worthy opponent, explained by way of him being a decorated veteran of the Rainforest Wars. His quest to get his life back leads him to Replacement Technologies, a company masterminded by the wealthy Drucker (Tony Goldwyn) who works close- ly with his chief scientist Weir (Robert Duvall). Are they willing to help poor Arnie get his world back, or will they destroy him to cover up the evidence? With a strong supporting cast around him Schwarzenegger is very good, erasing memories of his recent failures which include End of Days (1999) and Jingle All the Way (1997). There are strong supporting performances from Tony Goldwyn, so good in Ghost (1990) all those years ago, and Robert Duvall as Weir, who may or may not be working in our hero's best interests. If a thrilling action film is all you seek, The Sixth Day is exactly the entertainment you want. Little substance, though the actors involved do their damnedest to make the film seem impor- tant; this is pure, high octane fun.
