The documentary, enti- tled Silent Music, is being directed by new film maker Christopher Lane, a recent graduate of the film program at Trebas Institute. Mr. Foote, 41, was the director of the film studies program until being promoted to the position of director of the Toronto campus of Trebas last week. Mr. Lane became inter- ested in the life and times of Mr. James, a long-time associate of Charlie Chaplin's who began his collaboration with the great film make in the 1950s. His research led him to Mr. James' home, just south of Port Perry. "Chris researched it, and found out the guy lives in Whitby," said Mr. Foote, who was scheduled to wrap up a series of interviews with Mr. James this week. Mr. Foote, who has written film reviews for The Weekend Star since the paper began, will also narrate the film, and act as executive pro- ducer. "In the later years, Chaplin was frustrated with the rinky-dink scores attached to his silent films, so he hired Mr. James to work with him," said Mr. Foote, who cred- its Mr. James with provid- ing "an extraordinary insight into Chaplin away from the movies." Although he relied heavily on his associate to produce the scores for his films, Mr. Chaplin never listed Mr. James as com- poser in credits, said Mr. Foote, instead crediting him as a musical associ- ate. Despite that slight, Mr. James remains loyal to his former partner, said Mr. Foote. Mr. James and his wife, singer Phyllis O'Reilly, still entertain at seniors' homes near their Whitby home. It is hoped a rough cut of the film, which has a low production budget of around $200,000. will be completed by the end of December.
