"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2000 - 3 Tears, tributes mark trustees':last-board session By Rik Davie Weekend Star Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew and Uxbridge-Brock rep Nancy Loraine traded tears and compli- ments at Monday night's Durham District School Board meeting Mrs. Drew said farewell to the board, and Mrs. Loraine said good-bye on behalf of another trustee. Mrs. Drew, who lost a close race for the Scugog regional councillors seat in the municipal election Nov. 13, told fellow trustees that after 12 years at the board table, BER 3 Drew Loraine "it is time to move on." "Without the mentoring of trustees like Ruth Anne Schedlich and more recently, Nancy Loraine, 1 could not have accom- plished so much at this table," said the Port Perry resident. Mrs. Drew took the opportunity to speak to new trustees who have yet to take their seats. "You are not here to adminis- ter," she said. "Think of yourselves as advocates and ombudsmen for the students." With tears in her eyes, the vet- eran trustee thanked her fellow trustees, saving special thanks for a colleague who was not present. It was left to Nancy Loraine to read an emotional statement from Pickering - trustee Ruth Anne Schedlich. Mrs. Schedlich was unable to campaign prior to the election or attend her final meeting, as she sat at the bedside of her critically ill husband. Mrs. Loraine had to stop sever- al times to wipe tears from her eyes as she read the address from Mrs. Schedlich. She also bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Drew. "When will we ever see the likes of trustees like Bobbie Drew, who commit 10 or 12 years to this board?" Mrs. Loraine said. "I have come to appreciate that whether we here agree or disagree, the commitment to education is here. I am not sure we will see trustees as long serving as Bobbie Drew or Ruth Anne Schedlich come along at school boards." Among the new trustees about to take seats on the board are an 18-year-old OAC student from Pickering, two sisters-in-law from Ajax and Cynthia Stefan, daughter of failed Scugog trustee candidate and family values advocate Carol Switzer. i ¥e ALL NEW 4X4 ATV'S *6.9% Financing for 1 year or 9.9% .
