On Nov. 6 at the 2lst annual Scotiabank Hays Classic, Joel Phoenix, 18, of Uxbridge was the winner of the Senior! Showmanship division. He'then went on to become the Grand Champion Showman of the prestigious show. Joel's partner in the show ting was a senior Holstein calf, Joalfarms Rudolph Wobbels. Curtis Gregson of Alton was the Reserve Champion Showman, while Scott Buckley of Lindsay received Honourable Mention. For more than 20 years, the Scotiabank Hays Classic has provided the opportu- nity for young people throughout Canada to par- ticipate in the premier dairy show for 4-H youth. Five provinces - Alberta, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Quebec - were represented by 352 competitors. At the President's Cup held Nove. 10, Joel's cousin Mike Phoenix, 20, of Greenbank, became the Grand Champion Showman. Top Counselor High Class, Mike competed against 82 other contestants from sev- eral countries. The President's Cup is not a 4-H event; it's sponsored by Holstein Canada, and is open to competitors between the ages of 17 - 21. Both men were part of the Durham West 4-H team, which also cleaned up at the Royal. For the fourth con- secutive year the squad eamed the highest points overall with their display, showmanship and confor- mation to become the Premiere County once more. There was a margin of 60 points between Durham West and second- -place Halton County. Another member of the Durham West team who was in the limelight was Alec Stone of Sunderland. He won the Junior Showmanship division, then went on to become Junior Champion Showman with his calf Valcroft Lee Cindy. Others on the Durham West team were Adam Clark, David Werry, Robert Werny, Warren Yates, John Wery and Carl Phoenix. In the Summer Yearling class, 'Carl Phoenix placed fifth with his entry. In the Junior Yearling class David Wery's calf placed seventh, Warren Yates' placed 11th and John Werry's calf came in twelfth place. It was no wonder the Durham West team also won the Best of Three class, too. 'Competing against 50 other Groups of Three, the who also was Grand Champion Showman of the Scotiabank Hays Classic in 1995. "l was really pleased for them," leader Earl Phoenix said. "They buckled down, worked together as a team, and all their hard efforts paid off. "I couldn't have been more proud." Mike's calf then went on to prove her stuff again at the Royal's Open Holstein Show where she placed first in the Senior Calf Division and then emerged three animals were shown [B® by Alec, Mike and Joel.
