The fifth week of the RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) initia- tive saw Durham Regional Police officers stationed in Port Perry, as well as Oshawa, Whitby, Bowmanville, Ajax, and Pickering. At the RIDE stop in Port Perry last Wednesday (Dec. 20), members of the newly formed Durham chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) were on hand to see the campaign against drinking and dri- ving in action. They joined the RIDE team at a spot check on Simcoe St., just south of Hwy. 7A. . in -addition to observing the officers in action, the. MADD members handed out gift bags to drivers who had not been drinking. The bags are the organization's fray of thanking thosé who take advice not to drink and drive. Here's a break down of the results from week five of the RIDE campaign, with season-to-date totals in parentheses: 0 Police stopped 5,150 vehicles at RIDE spot checks (33,385 for the year); a They gave roadside breathalyzer tests to 11 dri- vers (468); a Officers issued 22 twelve-hour suspensions to drivers who registered warnings on the breathalyz- er (129); and a They charged 11 peo- ple with driving while exceeding the legal blood- alcohol level (51). Other charges laid against drivers were five for impaired driving; one for possession of drugs; two against people for breach- ing bail conditions; four for driving with suspended licenses; five for liquor vio- lations, and 28 for Highway Traffic Act infractions. . The effort continues for the remainder of the holi- day season. Police report 25 accidents on North Durham roads Durham Regional Police reported 25 acci- dents over the four-day Christmas weekend on North Durham roads. On Christmas Day, December 25 at about 5 p.m., a 30-year-old male driver of a vehicle travel- ing east on Regional Rd. 8 just west of Uxbridge reportedly suffered a seizure and struck a parked car with one occu- pant in it. The occupant of the parked vehicle: was unhurt, but a passenger in the eastbound vehicle suffered minor injuries and was transported to Uxbridge Cottage Hospital. The driver suf- fered another seizure on the way to. hospital; but is reported to be satis- factory at press time. Earlier in the day, at 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 25, a 60-year-old Little Britain woman was involved ina head-on collision while traveling south on Regional Rd. | south of Leaskdale. Police say the woman told police she was watching another car that had gone into the ditch, when she crossed the centerline and struck a 'northbound vehicle. No one in either vehi- cle suffered serious injury. Meanwhile, a Goodwood man's Christmas luck was not with him when he was struck by another vehicle as he attempted to back 4 his vehicle out onto. Hwy. + 47 on Dec. 24 at 4:30 p.m. .~ When police arrived it was discovered that the man's vehicle had no proper insurance or reg- istration papers, and he 'was charged with several violations . under The Highway Traffic Act. ~ Markham woman. ~ road was closed for close to seven hours as the injured Seven injured in crash near Port Perry Seven people were taken to hospital Tuesday night (Dec. 26) after an accident on Hwy. 7A just east of Port Perry. Ontario Provincial Police report that a 64-year-old Uxbridge man was westbound on Hwy. 7A near Island Rd. around 8:40 p.m. in a 1996 Dodge Ram pickup. He was hauling a snowmobile trailer. According to police, the left rear side of the trailer came into contact with a 1995 Chrysler being driven east on Hwy. 7A by a 30-year-old Bowmanville man. The Chrysler spun and collided head-on with a west- bound 1999 Nissan, being driven by a 46-year-old area. Those injured in the Chrysler include the 30-year-old Bowmanville man, who was taken to Port Perry hospital with a fractured leg; a 41-year-old female who was taken to Uxbridge hospital with head injuries; a 17-year-old male was rushed to Oshawa hospital with back injuries, and a 15-year-old female who was taken to Uxbridge with back and neck injuries. Those injured in the Nissan included the 46-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man, both of whom were taken to St. Michael's hospital in Toronto with broken legs. A 15-year-old male was also taken to Uxbridge hos- pital, where he was treated for minor bruises and cuts. The Uxbridge man was not injured. Both the Chrysler and Nissan were destroyed in the accident. OPP report the road was clear, and that charges are pending.
