The event, attended by nearly 100 people was a resounding success, raising awareness and over $7,000 for Driftwood's Millennium Bus project. ; The Millennium Bus project is an ongoing, capital expense project that will see the Driftwood Theatre Group transform a full-length school bus into a traveling theatre facility. The Bus will feature permanent backstage and chang- ing facilities for actors, providing privacy and greater com- fort; storage space for all of the company's touring equip- ment; an on-stage, permanent lighting position for better lighting quality; and a raised portable stage which drasti- cally improves audience sightlines. The entire facility is designed to reduce long set-up and strike times and to serve as a traveling billboard for Driftwood and its supporters. The Get on the Bus Campaign began in March of 2000. The total cost for the Millennium Bus project is estimated at $30,000. Funds from Friday evening's Gala will be used to finish payments on the portable staging purchased for the summer 2000 tour of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. The next step in the project is the purchase of a used bus, which is now nearly possible. Individuals and corporations interested in supporting the project can direct any questions to Artistic Director and General Manager, D. Titled Bound for Glory' the CD is performed by "Uxtet", the collective name for a dozen young women between the ages of 12 and 31, all of whom have been part of the Uxbridge performing arts scene for some time. Bound for Glory includes a wide variety of music -- spirituals to folk to show tunes and old standards. Several are sung unaccompanied, others fea- ture the piano of 12-year-old Tamara Saringer, the youngest member of the group. The songs were originally per- formed in concert in Uxbridge in June of 2000 under the direction of local conductor Conrad Boyce, and subse- quently recorded at Utica United Church by sound engineer Paul Baster. ET --..., "All of these girls are enormously talented," says Mr. Boyce. "Some are already at university studying music, and the rest are seriously considering careers in either music or theatre. 'Uxtet' was a glorious opportunity to bring them all together, and the result was so fine that we just had to record them." The members of 'Uxtet' are: Catherine Brandon, Heather Brandon, Nicole Docherty, Rebecca Jess, Anne Lewis, Stephanie Ruttan, Tamara Saringet, Leah Speers, Kerry Thompson, Erin Wemyss, Alida Wesselo, and Melinde Whitfield. Their names will be familiar to regular patrons of the performing arts in Uxbridge and area. "Each member of 'Uxtet' is a soloist in her own right," says Mr. Boyce, "and several are featured on the CD. Included among the dozen pieces on Bound for Glory are the spiritual "Deep River", the beautiful Newfoundland folk song "She's Like the Swallow", the pop classic "Stand By Me", and a luscious jazz rendition of the old standard "My Funny Valentine". "I threw so many different styles at them," says Mr. Boyce, "and they loved the challenge. Their youthful versatility really shines through. Listening to the CD is just an exhilarat- ing musical experience." Bound for Glory is on sale in Uxbridge at Radio Shack, Blue Heron Books and Presents, Presents.
