During the fifth week of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere initiative, which ran from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2, officers conducted roadside spot checks in Port Perry, Oshawa, Whitby, Bowmanville, Ajax, and Pickering. Officers stopped a total of 5,045 vehicles and administered 93 road- side breath tests. Police also issued 21 suspensions and arrested 11 motorists for driving over the legal blood-alcohol limit. Other charges laid by the RIDE unit last week include those for impaired driving, drugs, theft, breaching bail and probation condi- tions, and careless driving. Police also laid charges for liquor and license violations, as well as var- ious Highway Traffic Act infractions. Over the past five weeks, the Durham Police RIDE program has stopped a total of 38,430 vehicles and administered 561 roadside breath tests. : As a result, they issued 150 12- hour suspensions and arrested 62 people for driving impaired.
