"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2001 - 1§ Dale Phillips collects two awards at banquet Sunderland youth is named top 4-H member By Heather McCrae Weekend Star Dale Phillips was four years old when he first became interested in 4-H. "I saw how much fun my older sister Vickie was having with her 4-H calf. | thought it Ve really neat, and wanted to do the same," he said during an interview at the family's farm in Sunderland, Philhaven Holsteins. When he was 10 Dale joined Durham West's Sunderland Dairy Calf Club, and has participated every year since. Along the way he has joined sev- eral other clubs, too. In November at the Durham West Awards Night, Dale was the. sole recipient of the 24 Awards Project. He was also named the Outstanding 4- H Member of the Year, and received a gold watch from Farm Credit in Lindsay. "I was a bit surprised. After all, everyone else who was nominated was very worthy of this honour, too," he said. Other nomi- nees were Warren Yates, Mike Smith, Jennifer Stone, Carl Phoenix and Matt Jackson. Dale has done well for himself throughout his 4-H years. Now 18, he has his own herd of cattle - make that two herds. "I've always been very fond of our purebred Holsteins and now have a few of my own, but I've also acquired six Brown Swiss cattle, too, under my own prefix, Willow Waters Brown Swiss," said Dale. His love for the Brown Swiss began at a young age, when he saw the breed for the first time at the Royal Ontario Winter Fair. A few years later the clincher came when he saw the breed again at the World Dairy Expo show in Madison, Wisconsin. The next year, when he was in Grade 8, Dale bought his first purebred Brown Swiss cattle and picked his pre- fix. "These cattle are eye- catching and easy to work with," he said. The young entrepre-. neur says his cattle helped pay for his first car: "I sold one of my cows, and cashed in a GIC." Besides being a mem- ber of the Sunderland Dairy Calf Club, Dale. has been a member of count- less other clubs, including Veterinary Science, Judging, Horticulture, Drama, Field Crops, Marketing and the Square Dance Club. Next year, he says, he plans to also join the Senior Dairy Management Club. An honours OAC stu- dent at Brock High School, Dale has a busy workload. Milking, field work, keeping cattle records up to date and school assign-- ments keep him active throughout the year. He enjoys 4-H because it gives him an opportunity to socialize with other young people who share similar interests. "But 4-H is a success because of our dedicated leaders," he said. "Dan and Collette McFadden have been our leaders for the past eight years, and you couldn't ask for better folks. They keep it all very interesting for everyone." Club activities have taken Dale throughout Ontario, and beyond. Last spring he was one of three from Durham West chosen to attend the National Citizenship Seminar in Ottawa, and in August he was part of a 4-H exchange visit to Alberta / When he finishes high school Dale plans on going to the University of Guelph, where he will con- tinue with his "agriculture studies. "I want agriculture to be a big part of my life," he said. "I can't picture myself working in a nine-to-five office."
