IE ---- I. TES s "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2001 - 23 Tourney win gives Atoms a boost The Port Perry Predators Atom | team was busy after Christmas at a tournament in Peterborough. The team played the Stirling Blues in their first game of the ay. Evan Haslam opened the scoring for Port with what would be the first goal of his hat trick for this game. He was assis- sted by Cody Steranka. Stirling had a few chances but Port Perry goalies Kris Barchuk and Faser Gibson shut the door every time. Richard Van Netten put two past the Stirling goalie, while single markers went to Cody Steranka and Taylor Muir. Joy McCoy, Trevor Dezan, Chris McGuinnes and Craig Wise all tallied up assists. The final score was Predators 7, Stirling 0. The MVP for this game was Evan Haslam. The second game was a hard fought battle between Port Perry and Port Hope. The first period was a scoreless one with heated end to end action." Travis Mason put the puck in for Port Perry to put us ahead but Port Hope answered with two goals in the last minute of play in the second period. Travis was assist- ed by Richard VanNetten and Joe McCoy. With four minutes left in the third peri- od, Cody Steranka tied the score up on an unassisted goal. But with only 30 sec- onds left in the game, Port Hope man- aged to get one in and won the game 3- 2. Predators MVP went to Fraser Gibson for an outstanding performance between the pipes. Port went on to win the "B" Final against Otonabee and just about every- one got a point with the final score being 10to I. Richard VanNetten had a hat trick, Craig Wise and Trevor Dezan scored two goals apiece, and Graeme Brown, Travis Mason, and Evan Haslam each netted one goal. Assists were spread out' between Joe McCoy, Evan Haslam, Richard VanNetten, Kyle Newbold, Cody Steranka, Ryan Laycoe, Chris McGuiness, . Travis Mason and Jesse Isaacs. The MVP for our final game was Richard VanNetten. This tournament gave the boys a boost they needed and they went on to play an exciting home game on Jan. 5 against Oshawa. Each team held the other scoreless in the first period and then Port Perry opened the scoring in the second on a goal by Craig Wise, assisted by Taylor Muir. Oshawa had a few chances before finally tying it up but were checked well by our defense, especially by Tom Whiteway and Graeme Brown. The third period saw two more goals for Port Perry scored by Travis Mason and Craig Wise. Oshawa answered both to tie the game. Kirk Anderson and Evan Haslam had a couple of chances but Oshawa held on to the tie and then, with 36 seconds to go, managed to slip one in and win the game. Port Perry pulled their goalie and managed four or five good chances in the final 36 seconds but Oshawa's goalie managed to hold them off for the win.
