"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2001 - 3 BIA will By Chris Hall Weekend Star Port Perry's Business Improvement Area (BIA) members have agreed to throw their support behind a new midsum- mer festival this year. Last week the Scugog Chamber of Commerce announced that Port Perry's annual summer carnival, Festival Days, would be cancelled. After 30 years of being staged as a downtown event, Festival Days was moved in 2000 to the Port Perry fairgrounds. Store Replacement for Festival Days owners on Queen and Water Streets had com- plained the event inter- fered with business. For the summer of 2001, Chamber members have proposed to form a partnership with the Port Perry BIA, and create a new festival. It has tentatively been scheduled to be held July 13 and 14. The new event will still feature a head- line entertainer, but will Councillors alarmed by $800,000 price tag for transfer stations A regional report on the cost of operating waste transfer stations raised a few eyebrows during Monday's council meeting. In a report detailing the amount of taxes levied in 2000, it was noted that more than $800,000 was set aside for Scugog's transfer sta- tions, about $200,000 more than in neighbour- ing Uxbridge and Brock townships. A total of $804,126 was set aside for solid waste management for Scugog in 2000; region officials earmarked $493,087 for Brock Township and $585,682 for Uxbridge. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt questioned the accuracy of the figures. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce also wondered if people are not taking advantage of curbside garbage pick- up, which was recently introduced here in all of Scugog. "Maybe they're going to the transfer station rather than using pick- up," she said. "Our waste manage- ment costs are way higher than the two other rural municipali- ties. Are we really abus- ing the system here in Scugog?" : Mayor Moffatt again stressed that the figures may be wrong, but added: "if we're doing this to ourselves, then we should be ashamed." The BIA's two biggest concerns, she said, are the midway and vendors. With no midway, there will be ample parking for the event near the CIBC branch in Port Perry, said Ms Brock. And the BIA supports the idea as long as they're are no outside vendors competing for customers' business, she said. OURWINTER Upto SALE CONTINUES... Yo Off and Footwear for Men, Women and Kids
