The possibility of the province imposing its view on regional government here, as has been the case in nearby Toronto and Hamilton, did inspire local politicians to look at the way municipal government operates, and realize a plan for stream- lining those operations is necessary. The thinking here was that the Tories, on a mission to rid the province of duplication and waste, would come thundering in to create a new municipal entity, unless some action was taken to prevent it. So, mission accomplished, to a degree; the province is on the way to accomplishing what amalgamation would have, without the messy political fall-out that would have accompanied a forced restructuring. One might argue it's been along time coming. Durham Region is comprised of a number of municipalities of varying sizes and characters, ranging for rural to urban. All of these municipalities have for years carried on operations that could have been shared with neighbours, to the benefit of all. So we like the fact that the rural municipalities of Scugog, Uxbridge, Brock and Clarington are examining just those possi- bilities. It's the way of the future, and it makes sense. 1 -_. THE FALL OF RANE Operation Scugog sends sincere thanks to food bank supporters To the Editor: Operation Scugog's committee members would like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest thanks and apprecia- tion to all of the individuals and volunteers who assisted in the Christmas Basket Campaign in Scugog Township. We would like to thank all of the church- es, schools, banks, stores and businesses, local papers, organizations, families and individuals for adopting and preparing hampers filled with food, gifts and toys. Confidentiality was maintained by assign- ing families code numbers, yet these ham- pers were prepared with so much love and care. The monetary donations helped us to provide each hamper with a voucher for a turkey. We provided 160 families with . Christmas hampers. Operation Scugog was also able to pro- vide the following organizations and indi- viduals with special Christmas items: Monetary donations were given to Central Seven and the C.O.P.E. program to buy gifts for their residents and participants The residents of Chateau Blue Manor received gifts for clothing, toiletries and candies Residents in the Blackstock and Port Perry area who participate in Luncheon Date, Friendly Visitors and Meals on Wheels received boxes of cookies. You helped to make Christmas a joyful time for many in Scugog. Your tremendous support during the Christmas season and throughout the year is greatly appreciated.
