"WEEKEND STAR" CRIME STOPPERS Crime Stoppers and Durham Regional Police are seek- ing the public's assistance in solving an assault that occurred in Ajax on March 1 of this year. On Tuesday morning around 1:30 a.m. the victim had occasion to be walking westbound on Kingston Road near Harwood Avenue when he was approached by four males. In what has been described as an unprovoked attack the complainant was pushed to the ground and viciously punched and kicked. After the attack the suspects fled the area. The victim sustained several lacerations, which required medical attention. Suspect number one is described as a black male 5'9" Maria Montessori and the Montessori Method Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy. She worked in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, and education. She developed her philosophy of education based on observation of children of all social classes and in many countries. She believed that each child ~ is born with a unique potential to be revealed, rather than a "blank slate" waiting to be written upon. Montessori recognized the most important years for learning are those between birth and age six. She felt education should be an aid to life, a collabdration with nature. To assist the child in achieving this natural potential within him/herself, Montessori used her vast experience with and obser- vations of children to develop a method of education that allows the child to develop and learn naturally through spontaneous, self-directed activities. Montessori stressed the importance of preparing the best environment for the child, according to the different stages of life. She recognized that at certain times, young children had a special ability to focus on specific aspects of their environment. Montessori described these stages as sensitive most eager and best equipped to learn particular concepts. A young child effortlessly acquiring his native tongue is an - example of a sensitive period in motion that we have all witnessed. scientifically the theories that Montessori formed through her extensive observations of children beginning over 80 years ago. 'The Montessori classroom (known as the prepared environ- ment) allows the child the freedom to choose actively, to manipu- late specifically designed materials and to work through cycles of learning according to his/her needs and capabilities, all within an organized framework. This active education encourages concen- tration and self-discipline while allowing the child to absorb new concepts and skills. The Montessori teacher (called the direc- tress), offers new experiences, encourages enthusiasm for learn- ing without interfering with the child's independence. Children are encouraged to share accomplishments, resolve problems and to develop an understanding for the other members of their class- room community. In this atmosphere of acceptance and respect is seen the development of responsible, self-directed and self- disciplined students with a love of learning. or to make an eo information 'o1alelsl please ( ao (oo XB Monicssor] Education 2001 periods, that'being & length of time in a child's life When he/she is ~ As well, today neuropsychiatrists are now starting to prove: ~ Four suspects sought in vicious attack tall, medium build and short hair. Open House and | September Registration i 5 By The aim of Montessori education is not to fill the child's head with facts; it is to cultivate the natural desire to learn and the opportunity to reach his or her fullest potential. The Benefits of Montessori Education, When we try to define what our children, really "get" from Montessori, we need to expand our vision to include more than just the basics. Montessori children learn not only to read, do four-digit mathematics, recognize geometric shapes, and identify the parts of a plant; but, more importantly, they learn how to be a contributing member of a community. A Montessori school is more than a classroom. It is society in microcosm and the skills and lessons they lear in this environment extend well beyond the definition of academic success. They are life lessons that are very much needed by our children today. The real meaning, with linguistic and spiritual of Casa dei Bambini is "Thé Children's Home". This offers a more accurate and complete description of the character of a Montessori classroom. Montessori schools are actually designed on the model of a home, family and community. Where one sees small children manipulating concrete learning materials, there is actually a domestic scene with its own special form of social life and education. What is established is not simply a classroom in which children are taught to read and write. The Casa dei Bambini represents a social and emotional environment where children are respected and empowered as individual human beings. It is an extended family, a community in which children truly belong and really take care of one another, They have a strong sense of self-respect and personal identity. Within this safe and empowering community, the young child learns at the deepest possible level, to believe in him/or herself. In an atmosphere of independence, with community and personal empowerment, he or she never loses the sense of curiosity and innate ability to learn and discover. With great confidence in him/herself, he/she opens up the world around him/her and finds that mistakes are not something to be feared, but rather the end- less opportunity to learn from experience. Ohi A word of caution. The name Montessori is in the public domain and as such anyone can use it. Just because the work Montessori Is in the school name does not guarantee a Montessori education is being offered. Call 1-800-954-6300 for associate members schools. www.coma.ca/coma.
