About 80 kids from Port Perry High School partici- pated in the World Vision fundraiser this year. Students involved in the famine had been raising moriey since the beginning of March, and ended .up with a grand total of between $2,000 and $2,500. On the night of April 5, in the midst of their 30- hour fast, students who had raised money were invited to spend the night in the high school gym. Those at the mass sleep- over spent. the evening playing dodgeball and basketball, sucking on popsicles, and watching movies on a large screen. The following afternoon, food was provided in the cafeteria for the students to break their fast. Organizers of the event would like to thank the fol- lowing businesses for donating food and services to the effort: Kentucky Fried Chicken, Square STAR J | Benefit for World Vision Boy's, Trader Sam's, MEM Meats, IGA, Reid's Independent, Video Plex and Mrs. Tansley's cooking class at the high school. World Vision recently sent a plaque to Port Perry High School to recognize the top 10 ranking in Ontario the students earned in last year's effort. Because there was a greater number of stu- dents involved in the famine last year, the total amount of money raised was $6,300. ~The actual amount of money that the students raise each year is only a part of the famine's goal. Awareness of world pover- ty is increased in schools because of the 30 Hour Famine, organizers say. "Although it was only 30 hours, the participants gained a small taste of what millions of children throughout the world have to go through every day of their lives," said Ruth Knight, one of the event organizers. "We had fewer kids this year, but it was a success because any money raised isa help."
