Chris Hall photos Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor has chal- lenged the other seven mayors in- Durham and the Regional Chair to put together teams for the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life event coming up June | and 2 at Oshawa Civic Fields. Mayor O'Connor rose during Durham Regional Council's meeting Wednesday morning to announce that her staff of 13 people had already organized one team and were hoping to field a second one to take part in the inaugural fundraising event and urged the other mayors and Regional Chair Roger Anderson to do the same. "I think everyone in this council chamber has been touched in some way by this terrible dis- ease," said Mayor O'Connor. The Relay For Life will feature teams of 10 to 12 people running or walking continuously in an overnight relay beginning around 8 p.m. on June | and concluding around 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 2. Each team will be able to pitch a tent on the grounds of the Civic Field and enjoy the entertain- ment and refreshments when not actually running or walking. Luminaries, candles dedicated to cancer sur- vivors and to those who have lost the battle, will light the relay route after dusk. The luminaries can be purchased at any branch of the Royal Bank in Durham for $5 a piece or at the Canadian Cancer Society office, as well there will be a cancer sur- vivors' Victory Lap pre- ceding the main relay event. This is the first year for Durham's event and so far I3 teams have signed up. Canadian Tire has signed on as the event sponsor.
