Bill 102 received first read- ing, but died on the order paper when the new ses- sion of the legislature opened last month. > Mr. O'Toole said he will review the contents of last year's bill and reintroduce it in the legislature at the first available opportunity. "This bill is the result of meeting with my con- stituents and working with their ideas," said Mr. O'Toole. "As a commuter who travels Highway 401 almost every day, I see too many examples of distract- ed driving. | strongly believe that this legisla- 'tion is needed." If passed, the bill would allow the use of cell phones only if they are operated in a hands-free mode. Use of a regular cell phone would be permitted only in emergencies. In addition, the proposed legislation would require the compilation of data on accidents where the use of cell phones, portable com- puters or fax machines played a significant role in motor vehicle accidents. "I believe my Private Memberis: Bill would save lives, prevent injuries and encourage all drivers to keep their mind on the road,"said Mr. O'Toole. "There's no phone call that can be more impor- tant than the life of our fel- low-motorists, passengers and pedestrians."
