"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2001 -23 Matt Doble's going for Olympic gold in 2008 Local wrestler's got his sights set high By Travis Gray Weekend Star You could be looking at the next Daniel Igali. Matt Doble, a 13-year- old Grade 8 student at Sunderland Public School, wants to follow in the footsteps of the man who emigrated from Nigeria to Canada, and captured gold at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Matt has. been wrestling for the past five years and has rung up a string of accomplish- ments. He has won bronze, sil- ver, and two golds at the provincial championships in three age categories. He won silver at the Canada East tournament last year in Milton, Ontario. He lost out on gold by a single point. Last month, the tourna- ment was held in Granby, Quebec, and he took home the gold in the ban- tam age category (12-13). In addition to that, he has won two gold and two bronze at the the Durham Regionals in two age cate- gories. Matt said his brother John, who is four years older than him, was wrestling at the time, and so he got into it because he thought it was "neat". Ed Copeland, who, along with fellow coach Duane Agnew, has been coaching Matt ever since he started, recalls Matt's amazing display last month. "As far as the Canada East (tournament), he pinned two kids and 12- pointed the other one, which in wrestling, is pret- ty awesome," he said. "He just blew through his weight class basically." In wrestling, points are awarded for certain moves. Mr. Copeland said there is a 10-point mercy rule in effect. The rules, however, can allow for more than 10 points to be won. Matt won 12-0. "I had 10 (points) and | had him in a pin and he lifted me up and | almost pinned him (again)," Matt recalled, "so I got another two points for going on." Matt will graduate this year and will head off to Brock High School, but because of the ongoing feud between teachers and the province, a wrestling program is not available at Brock or Port Perry High School. The next step for Matt is Oshawa, and the wrestling team Impact. "Matt's going to be It's a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life's June 1 in Oshawa When Sandra Warren- Boone read about the Canadian Cancer.Society's Relay For Life in her local paper late one evening, she got on the phone immediately and contact- ed all the members of her family to form a team. The result is a team made up of three generations includ- ing members from as far away as Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, to partici- pate in the Durham Region Relay For Life on June | and 2 being held at Civic Field in Oskawa from 8 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday. "I thought this was a great way to get everyone together," says Warren- Boone. "We're all doing this for the same purpose - to participate in Relay For Life in memory of my mother." Warren-Boone's family Relay For Life is a com- munity-based fundraising event -that involves teams of 10 to 12 people who par- ticipate in an overnight non-competitive relay. Each team keeps at least one member on the track at all times. Teams consist of people representing community organizations, sports teams or clubs, large corporations, small businesses, neighbour- hoods, families and friends. The teams camp out on the grounds of a track and have fun enjoy- ing camaraderie, enter- tainment, and refresh- ments. Everyone is bond- ed by a common goal - to beat cancer. Luminaries, special can- dles placed in paper bags, each bearing the name of a loved one who has sur- vived cancer or lost their life to the disease, line both sides of the track. At dusk, the candles are lit, providing light and inspi- ration as participants walk through the night. The first lap of Relay For Life is dedicated to cancer survivors. Cancer survivors are invited to participate in this life-affirming event by walking the Survivors' Victory Lap. The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to acknowledge MDS Inc. the Provincial Luminary Sponsor. Canadian Tire stores throughout Durham Region are the event spon- sors for the Durham Region Relay For Life. After ringing up a string of accomplishments over the last five years, Matt Doble, a 13-year-old Grade 8 student at Sunderland Public School, has his sights set high in the wrestling world. Here, Matt, left, is joined by his coach, Duane Agnew. going down to Impact for their summer program, so I suggested it (the pro- gram) to him," said Mr. Copeland. Matt watched Igali per- form his heroics last fall, and his sights are set on the Olympics. "That's my goal... either that or make it out of Canada for a tourna- ment... and do good," he said modestly. If Matt continues on his winning streak, we just may see a new hometown wrestling hero in time for the 2008 Qlympics, which coincidentally enough, could be held in Toronto.
