Ward 4 Councillor David Dietlein brought the mat- ter up before council on Monday (May 14), asking that a town hall-style meeting be held in Cartwright. Residents - have expressed a desire to air concemns about road con- ditions in Ward 4, and are campaigning against the closure of the waste trans- fer site there. The mention of frustrat- ed Cartwright residents seemed to touch a nerve with Mayor Doug Moffatt. "I have no problem holding a town hall meet- ing. We're going to be embarking on some pretty significant changes with regards to (waste) disposal out there," said Mayor Moffatt. "But we'll hold it when we're ready, and not when he wants," said the mayor, referring to Tom Ciupa. A Blackstock resident, Mr. Ciupa has circulated petitions on the dump and roads issues. : "In the past several years more money has gone into that area of the township (Cartwright) than any other, twice as much," said Mayor Moffatt. He noted that the town- ship has rebuilt the West Quarter Line, made Moffatt improvements to roads in the area of View Lake and St. Christopher's Beach, pledged to repair two bridges, built a new fire hall, and has committed close to $300,000 to the Cartwright Fields project in Nestleton. "I'm tired of hearing that we don't do anything out there... there has been considerable work done in Cartwright," said Mayor Moffatt. "We spend money on what needs to be done, not where people want things done." As for the future of the Cartwright transfer station, Mayor Moffatt said earlier that the region's works committee is looking into 'permanently delaying (the closure) or putting something else in there." Councillor Dietlein sug- gested that the region should look at tendering out the operation of the dump, and letting the pri- vate sector run the transfer station.
