"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JUNE, 2001 - 1 The Durham District School Board has been selected to operate a two-year demonstration project for expelled students. The project is a pilot that will help to determine the best way to implement strict-discipline programming province-wide. Under the Safe Schools Act, students who are fully expelled for violent or disruptive behavior will be required to meet the established outcomes of a strict dis- cipline or equivalent program before they can return to a public school system. Durham District School Board is one of seven Boards selected province-wide following the Ministry's request for proposals. "Durham District School Board is pleased to be select- ed to be a part of this unique project that will offer expelled students a locally-based option to work toward their return to the regular school system", said Grant Yeo, Director of Education with the Durham District School Board. "The announcement is a credit to our staff and our part- 'Strict-discipline' school for Durham ners who offer a significant level of expertise". he adds. In Durham, the project will be lead by the Durham District School Board which will work with many partners in the community including, Durham Catholic District School Board, Frontenac Youth Services, Chimo Youth Services, Durham Family Court Clinic' and the Whitby Mental Health Centre. "Together, with our partners, we will provide expelled students with a holistic approach to address both their academic and behavioural needs." says Mel Barwill, Principal, Centrally Assigned, Durham District School Board. "Our multi-disciplinary team will crovide students with the support and services they need to ensure their suc- cess and eventual return to the regular school system," he adds. Entry into the program is voluntary and will require parental/guardian involvement to ensure the continued success for each student. | 3300) Farm e DISCOUNTS FOR YOUR . INSURANCE BROKERS L1D.
