Over $50,000 in cash i ¥ > For RCE RTS Ee er FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2001 K-9 cops to compete at Durham College By Rik Davie The Star Police service dogs from Ontario and the United States will be strutting their stuff this weekend at Durham College. The Durham Regional Police Services K-9 Unit is inviting the public to see the dogs run at the 2001 United States Canine Associations annual Patrol Dog Certification Trials on the grounds of the college, located at Simcoe St. North and Conlin Ave. in Oshawa on Saturday and Sunday. Featured in the compe- tition from the Durham service will be Dave Saliba and Iron; Pete MacDonald = and Lex; Jim Stephenson and Rush; Chris Crosby and Trux; and Dave Mounsteven and Chase. The Durham team have been featured in several newspaper articles and a television documentary, but this will be the public's to he won! first chance to see these dogs in action with their partners. Sunday the public will see these dogs at their very best as they compete against teams from across the province and as far away as Michigan. In all, 25 teams of police officers and their canine partners will be put through their paces on area search, off-leash con- trol, officer protection and controlled search. The trials are part of the certification these teams must meet to stay on the job. The dogs will show in live-fire scenarios how they protect their handlers and the people of their communities on a daily basis in cities everywhere. The trials will take place on the south soccer field of the campus. The public are welcome from 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
