FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2001 IT'S A reat Life Stamp of approval Rick Quirk enjoys his stamp collecting hobby By Heather McCrae Weekend Star Rick Quirk has learned a lot about the world. Sure, it's been through school and newspapers but what started his global interest early in life was a hobby of col- _ lecting stamps. Turning 70 this fall, Mr. Quirk says he was 11 years old in 1942 when he began his hobby. "My first book was one that held blank pages and listed the names of all the countries in the world and told a bit about each one," he recalls. By 1964 he had collected over 4,000 stamps, "and goodness knows how many I have now." Growing up in Toronto, Mr. Quirk's father was a lawyer who would get mail from all over the world. And then there were relatives who were missionaries in India, China, Japan, Germany, France and South Africa, too. "I'd encourage everyone to write or his university years. "That's when I tucked them all away in a box but I'm glad I didn't dispose of them." After graduation, when he took a long trip that took him through 13 countries, Mr. Quirk began collecting stamps again throughout his odyssey. Leafing through his collection he says he has stamps from just about every | country in the world. "When | started (collecting) a lot of these countries didn't exist and | now have a compilation of stamps from coun- tries that have emerged since then," he said. Throughout his career as head of human resources for several companies, as well as the Ontario government, everyone knew about his hobby and often saved stamps for him. "Every time someone would go away on a trip I'd tell them to be sure to send me a postcard. The whole collecting save me stamps.
