"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2001 - 29 Kelp has been found to offer good protection from many kinds of modem pollu- tants, carcinogens and toxins, including radioactive materi- als. Kelp contains a kind of fiber shown to have antibiot- ic properties and it is also very hypocholesterolemic. An important effect of kelp is it's ability to increase resist- ance to fevers and infections, and it has proven to greatly reduce the incidence of mas- titis in dairy cows. Within the last 40 years, as research has proven the incredible nutritive value of kelp, demand for the sea- weed has expanded greatly into every avenue of the mar- ketplace. Kelp has become highly recognized as being extremely rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids. There are four groups of seaweed, green blue-green, red and brown. Only the brown and red are consid- ered of economic impor- tance. The browns flourish in cold water while the reds grow most abundantly in warmer, deeper waters. Seawater, comprising 70.8 per cent of the earth's sur- face, is the final collector of all mineral run-offs from the land and contains at least 49 of the earth's. 102 elements. Seaweed products are divided into two groups, derived and natural. Derived products are used primarily as thickeners, gelling agents and film firm- ers, and can be combined with foods without impairing flavour. However, the demand, which has grown so rapidly in this country, is for the natural products, for ani- mal food and fertilizer. Ascophylium nodosum is the most popular kelp avail- able on the market today. Harvested off the cold, clean, pollution-free North Atlantic coast of Canada, and processed under strict gov- emment quality controls, this high quality kelp is one of nature's richest sources of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Today's farmers are forced to face the problem of soil depletion, and crops that are suffering due to extended use of chemicals fertilizers, they are finding that by going back to nature, and using kelp as a soil conditioner, as a specialty fertilizer and as a foliar spray, they are treating many problems at the same time. While being environmentally friendly, they are "treating" the poor physical structure and trace element deficiencies of the soil. Crops yields are increased, and most impor- tantly, the nutritional value of crops increase dramatically. Studies and field trials have been done extensively around the globe on the incredible effects of Ascophyllum nodosum on agriculture and horticulture. T.L. Senn Ph.D. and Head Professor of Horticulture at Clemson University in South Carolina, has documented the triumphs of Ascophyllum nodosum in his book Seaweed and Plant Growth. It is an undisputed fact that the use of kelp increases the nutritive value of crops, nec- essary in nutritious forages. Kelp used as a feed sup- plement is equally as impressive. The high mineral content is an important prop- erty. Sixty major and trace chelated minerals, over 12 vitamins and 21 key amino acids present in Ascophyllum nodosum meal for livestock. It is reported to raise levels of production and perform- ance, improves digestion ability and promotes healthy fur and coats. It helps regu- late heat cycles, increases number and durability of sperm and improves rates of conception and normal Ke p - mother nature's gift births. It improves the overall health of an animal. Kelp helps to regulate thyroid, and aids in extracting the maximum nutrients from reg- ular feed ration. As far back as the 1950s studies were being conduct- ed on animals. Even "mink" were studied in.1959, by Dr. John A. Miller head of zoolo- gy at Ohio State University. He found that the mink ate less feed while receiving a kelp supplement, and over a 135 day period, they saved 1,228 pounds of food. The kelp fed mink weighed 5.3 ounces more per mink and averaged 1.1 inches more pelt length from the control group. The kelp fed mink were valued three to four dollars more per pelt. In other words, the kelp fed mink gained more pounds on less food, and produced larg- er pelts of greater value than mink fed with regular diet. Many studies have found the same types of results with. feed supplements of Ascophyllum nodosum, it is important to remember that this kelp is all natural, non- toxic, with no harmful side effects. Kelp has been mixed into almost every type of formula feed at many different levels. A very small amount of kelp is necessary to supplement livestock feed in order to obtain growth stimulation, feed conversion, increased productivity, and general health "improvement. Perhaps by going back to nature, and looking to the sea, we have discovered what has been available all along. Nature's perfect gift -- kelp.
