Ae RT NB 35 gm 7 aT ---- -- tri, LC ~ I 28 - "WEEKEND STAR" D> It's time to take a look back at this season's highlights By N.R. Caswell As we approach the end of our season, a look at the activities that highlighted our year may be in order. The fall bazaar as usual, was a great success and the Christmas din- ner was enjoyed by all in atten- dance. The pot luck dinners on the fourth Wednesday of each month are a special affair with great food and top notch entertainment and we do urg€ all members to come enjoy this fine evening. ' There has been an increase in the number of seniors taking part in the weekly activities that are held at the Latcham Centre which is encourag- ing to the organizers of these recre- ational hobbies and games. Our thanks to all the seniors that give of their time to manage these activities. We are indebted to the high school for the great dinners and entertainment that they have pro- vided us this spring and are looking forward to the barbecue on June 14. The pot luck in May featured a group of musicians from the high school under the direction of teacher Roy Snider-McGrath. Thanks to them for spending some time with us. : We have reached that time when a new executive is nominated with new people to fill any spots that are vacant. President Wayne Burrell and secretary Anne Zaporozan are step- ping down with the assurance that their efforts were appreciated. We Seniors Club season starting to wind down have been fortunate to have volun- teers that give of their time so gen- erously. June is the month set aside for seniors and we do hopé that they will be remembered for their efforts, not only in wars but in their contri- butions to this splendid country we live in and the way of life that has developed over the years. June 27 will see the final pot luck dinner and entertainment until September. We hope to see a full | house on that day starting at 5 p.m. Some of the activities continue through the summer months and are always open to those that would like to take part. Our wish is a safe and happy sum- mer to all. 2 The Corporation of the City of Kawartha Lakes Notice to Members of the Public Wishing to Serve on the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Services Board The Council of the Corporation of the City of Kawartha Lakes invites applications from members of the public who are interested in serving on the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Services Board. The expansion is expected to house new residents by mid-2002. Expansion of nursing home set to begin By Rik Davie The Star The ceremonial sod was turned last week for what will be a 30-bed expansion at the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt and Lifecare Management Inc. President Brian Bradley helped president of the resi- dents' council, John Dodds, launch an expansion that Mr. Bradley said is much needed. "There is no doubt that expansions of these residences and the building of new ones is a priority in rural commu- nities," Mr. Bradley said. "It allows smaller communities to care for, and be near to, their senior residents. And more importantly, it allows the seniors to remain in the commu- nities they know and love." The extension to the facility will be 24,000 square feet, with sections dedicated to patients with special needs. The structure's design will give the look of a residential complex while providing seniors with the support care they may require. Community Nursing Home administrator Kim Mitchell said completion is expected in March of 2002, with occu- pancy sometime in mid-2002.
