The two local partici- pants first registered for the ride after glancing over an ad in a mens' fit- ness magazine. Sensing an adventure, Mrs. Conde spoke with her counterpart and the pair signed up for the ride via the Internet. At that time, their training began in earnest. Besides weightlifting, the pair ride four days a week from the Sunderland area to Oshawa and back. Beginning next week, on each of their four training days they'll ride their bikes to Toronto before returning to Sunderland. Once their journey begins, each rider will ride 100 miles a day, which will see them on the road between eight and 10 hours per day. Organizers will follow the group with tents and showers, which will be set up at the end of each leg of the trip. All participants will be fed, but the flight to Alaska ($1,500 roundtrip) and all their biking equipment (more than $3,000 apiece) have to be purchased on their own. "Regardless of how ignorant you want to be of the (AIDS) situation here in Canada, it's here. You can avoid it, but it's not going away.. you might as well try and help find a cure for it," she said. Among the activities will be a silent auction for chef services for a party of eight; a slave for a day, featuring two students; Mrs. Conde's personal car: a 1995 Suzuki; dinner for two at Ristorante Luna in Uxbridge; and "maple syrup for life" (one litre a month for one year).
