The 68-year-old Port Perry man recently returned home after com- peting in the Summer Senior Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His souvenirs are two gold medals he won in the five-kilo- metre and [0-kilometre cycling events. | Thousands of senior athletes from across North America con- verged in Baton Rouge from July 14 - 28 to compete in 18 sporting events. In Mr. Hogarth's division, those aged from 65 to 69 years, he competed against 34 others. The only Canadian in the race, he won the five-kilometre event in 7 minutes and 50 seconds; Mr. Hogarth finished 28 seconds ahead Port Perry's Ted Hogarth, 68, travelled to Louisiana recently where he won two gold medals at the Summer Senior Olympics. CP Haircare Mobile Service Shampoos, Sets, Cuts Perms and more. For an appointment call Carolyn Park 852-4633 of the second-place cyclist. He also won the 10-kilometre race in 14 minutes and 34 seconds. "It was rather windy the day of the 5K race, but was relatively quiet for the 10K the following day," he recalled recently. The topography of the course was tough. "It was slightly uphill most of the way. It was like an invisible drag that slowed everyone down." Taking two days to drive down, Mr. Hogarth was accompanied by a friend from Collingwood, 75-year- old Jimmy Georgas. Mr. Georgas also came home with some impres- sive medals: three bronze medal- lions and a golden victory. "The oldest gold medallist at the Senior Olympics in Baton Rouge this year was 9l-year-old® Harry . Pepper of Texas. It was awesome to see him pedal over the finish line and he still had lots of spring in his step when he stepped up on to the podium." The local star senior athlete takes his training in earnest. From early spring through to the fall, Mr. Hogarth estimates that he pedals more than 5,000 km. In training, he uses a Merlin titanium bike but for the actual race he strides a Cervelo model. Up every morning at 6 a.m. he goes for power walks and works out in his basement gym. Breakfast, which is his favourite | meal, gets him off to a healthy start. The morning meal consists of two shredded wheat biscuits, topped with layers of bran, alpen, raisins, apricots, slices of banana and apple and two dozen seedless grapes. Add four large scoops of yogurt, molasses, milk and a sprinkling of wheat germ and you've got yourself a Ted Hogarth breakfast. "I finish it off with a bagel spread with either peanut butter or honey." Lunch is usually quite light and dinner is often pasta and a salad.
