------' 24 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001 Durham Regional Police Service welcomes new officers By Rik Davie Weekend Star The traditions of the Durham Regional Police Service were passed on from father to son as a new class of recruits was sworn in at R.S. McLaughlin Armory in Oshawa last week. | ; Standing proud last: Thursday (Aug. 16) evening was well-known local detective Paul Mooy as his son Chris was sworn in as a Durham Regional Police constable. Det. Mooy has: served the citizens of North Durham for many years as both a uniformed officer and as a member of 26 Division's Detective unit. He made national headlines in. October of 1994 after he and two other Durham Police offi- cers were wounded along with two civilians-in a rob- bery at a Port Perry bank. In spite of serious injuries, he returned to duty and was on hand to present son Chris with his badge as the rookie cop was sworn in by Justice of the Peace Jack Wiley. Another familiar face to Scugog residents was also a proud father that night. Now retired, former Cartwright Central Public School teacher Ed Maring, a long-time member of the Durham Regional Police Auxiliary and now. a Special Constable in the Court Services Branch of the Durham service, pre- sented his son Scott with his warrant card and badge. Not to be outdone in the tradition department, Const. Dave Mounsteven, who works with the Canine: _ Unit, presented the badge of office to-one of his two cousins joining the force. 'Wayne and Wes King, twin brothers, were signed 'on as Durham Police con- stables working out of dif- ferent divisions... no doubt to cut down on con- fused sergeants. Det. Mooy, who has 'seen his share of excite- ment in his long and dis- tinguished: career, told The Star, "man this is just the greatest feeling, this is wonderful and I am very proud." .Among the class of graduates were three who will soon be seen on the streets of North Durham: Constables Shaun Atkins, Craig Mullens and David O'Connell. ; ) The newest officers to hit the streets in North Durham were presented with their warrant cards and badges at a ceremony in Oshawa last week.
