"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2001 - 17 Now on DVD, Forrest Gump remains a powerful film From Page 9 FORREST GUMP Directed by Robert Zemeckis Now on DVD {*re) How an exploration of modern American pop- culture became a pop-cul- ture phenomenon is quite a tale, but that is precise- ly what occurred with Forrest Gump (1994), the Oscar-winning film from director Robert Zemeckis. Released in the sum- mer to glowing reviews, the film became a run- away box office 'smash, and eventually captured six Academy Awards, including best picture, best actor (Tom Hanks) .and director. Considering that the masterpiece Pulp Fiction (1994) © was released the samegvyear, Gump's wins represent 'quite an achievement. Paramount Home Video has just released Forrest Gump as a two- disc. set on DVD with: 'incredible extra features that will leave movie buffs salivating. First of all there is a stunning widescreen print of the film, which has never looked better than it does on disc. Hanks' performance seems actu- _ ally greater than it was in 1994 when it won him his second straight Academy Award for best actor. There isa purity to his work that is heartbreak- ing, from the moment he picks up the feather at the beginning of the film, through to his final grave- side farewell to Jenny, Hanks inhabits the char- acter. The key to great act- ing is never to get caught acting, but rather become the character. Make each line your own, make the words sound authentic, and allow every gesture to be real. That is precisely what Hanks. accomplishes in. this film with his quietly astounding performance. The measure of a truly 'great performance is to try . and imagine any other actor in the role, and with Forrest Gump, [I cannot. Simple-minded Forrest moves through modern. Anew 2002 Covnry has awvived, ovalloble for wmedinte delivery! American history quite accidentally, with a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Fiercely loyal to his friends and family, tragedy follows Forrest for most of his life, though the strength bestowed to him by his mother allows him ta persevere through even the most devastating of tragedies. There are fine support- ing performance from Robin Wright Penn as. his beloved childhood friend Jenny, Sally Field as Mama Gump, and best of all Gary Sinise as the enraged Lt. Dan, who survives Vietnam . courtesy of Forrest, but without his legs. His reconciliation to that event, his thank-you to Forrest, is among the film's most touching and heartbreaking moments. Among the extras with the film are a shor, audio which commentary with director Robert Zemeckis and a terrific screen test section includes a very young Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) testing for Forrest Jr. Many critics have called the film manipulative and a tearjerker, but | defy 'them to explain how the film works.
