"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2001 - 2§ Central 7 offices in Port Perry. Kevin Cooper and Melissa Evans were on hand at the Scorpions' fundraising yard sale, held last weekend at the Squad"s open to those from across North Durham Scorpions open up sports to those with special needs By Rik Davie Weekend Star Thanks to the efforts of a handful of local volunteers, resi- dents from across North Durham with special needs have been able to take part in some of their favourite sports. About three years ago, four- teen players -- all with special needs of one type or another -- got together and formed the Scorpions' baseball team, rough- ly similar to the squads compiled together for Special Olympics events. Now, a few years later and 25 players strong, they play a vari- ety of games and tournaments at two skill levels. Most recently, the senior team brought home the bronze medal from the 2001 provincial baseball champi- onships. Players between the ages of 10 and 65 with a wide variety of physical and mental challenges have formed a squad which rivals the gusto of any pro sports league. A registration fee of $75 a year is requested, but team organiz- ers are quick to say no one is turned away because of financial consideration. "They get to meet a lot of other people and travel all over the province to play," said. Lisa Warbrop. This Oct. 14 will mark the sec- ond year that the Scorpions have traded their bats and balls for skates and pucks by changing sports with the seasons and becoming the Scorpions' Hockey Club. "We had some equipment donated last year and we try to get deals with (used sporting goods stores), but what we really need are used hockey equip- ment donations," Ms. Warbrop said. "Port Perry Minor Hockey donated our goalie equipment and the (Great Blue Heron Charity) Casino helped." The team with the special players needs sponsorship help and assistance with their ice bill. Coaches are also needed, and Ms. Warbrop stresses that a full- time commitment is not essen- tial. Anyone with the skills to coach and the willingness to help out these special players with skating skills should contact the Scorpions. Everyone loves 'hockey and the Scorpions are proving that everyone can play Canada's national sport and the great game of baseball with the enthu- siasm it takes to score. Those interested in helping out are wel- come to call Lisa at 985-3644. 1 They'll travel west this weekend Uxbridge Storm to take part in St. Catharine's tourney The Uxbridge Storm Ul2 Boys, spon- sored by Gary Coppins Services, have been rewarded for their continued hard work this season with a recent three game winning streak. Wins against Darlington, Scarborough, Newmarket, Thornhill and Vaughan have helped the Ul2 Boys move their way to being only one point behind third place Darlington in league play. Earlier this season the Ul2 Boys entered the Ajax Tournament, where they played two very close games against Kingston and Islington, with a loss of 1-0 and a win of 1-0. The boys then lost a hard fought battle against the host team, which prevented them from advancing to the final found. hl oOUARE On the upcoming Uxbridge Fall Fair weekend, the squad will travel to the St. Catharines Grape and Wine Youth Cup. There they will be meet teams from Kitchener, Burlington, Darlington, and St. Catharines. We wish the boys the very best of luck. Go Storm. The outstanding members of this year's squad include: Kienen Ball, Scott Carss, Shawn Collins, Andrew Corbett, Andrew Cowper, Bryan Fumerton, Nick Hill, Kyle Hyde, Luke Irwin, Andrew Jennings, Mathew Lawrence, Mark Lawrence, Taylor McKeown, Eric Speers, Michael Tache, Nathan Whitty and Cameron Wilson. They are coached by Trudy Corbett and Dermott Jennings.
