Durham Board to begin annual reports on school conditions By Rik Davie Weekend Star The Durham District School Board' will begin | compiling annual reports on the life expectancy of schools starting this year. "In December of 1999, the Ministry of Education requested that all Ontario school boards to report yearly... as to the condi- tion, operational costs and deferred mainte- nance for each of its schools," Superintendent of Facilities Services Jack Massie told trustees in a report to the board at Monday night's standing <¥.+| committee meeting. The report, which is mandatory under new ministry guidelines, will give an estimated life expectancy in such areas as the facility's general condition, heating sys- tems, books and parking lots as well as a report on how well the services' department does its job. Standing Committee Chair and Uxbridge/Brock Trustee Nancy Loraine questioned what the ~ board itself will benefit from the annual report. Mr. Massie replied that besides the obvious infor- mation on the. need for maintenance or new schools, the report is a self-evaluation of ser- vices. "It will be valuable to have the input of the other people in the sys- tem, (teachers and other staff) evaluate how well 'we do our job. So far the results have been far bet- ter than | would have hoped for." The reports will be made available to the: School Community Councils and when they are released early in the new year. 7 Durham Steam Clean e 3M Scotchguard e Broadloom © Upholstery AINE, | 056 Rugs \ 905-985-8552 905-852-6711 SN THERAPY & COUNSELLING Dr. Bill Eull, Ph.D., C.Psych.
