"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2001 -17 2001 could be the worst year ever for cinema From Page 9 push the limits of cine- ma as an art form? Where is the visionary who will set the standards by which the film makers of this generation are mea- sured? Watching Apocalypse Now Redux was like watching a brand new film, full of energy and bold ideas that are sadly lacking in today's cinema. The reasons for the lack of ideas and courage in modern movies is sim- ple... money. Ideas and bold, new directions in cinema has not, and will not, sell tickets. Producers and studio heads measure every- thing with a dollar sign, and if there is the slight- est doubt of not making money, the idea will be shelved. On rare occa- sions, art and commerce merge, as they did in The Godfather (1972) or Schindler's List (1993), but again, rare occasions. When will films become strong again? When will we again see the renaissance of film making which took place in the 70s? When direc- tors develop ideas and new, inventive ways to tell their stories. When audiences stop support- ing bad films. Grant money allows Port Perry Seniors to make some big changes Courtesy of the Trillium Foundation, the Latcham Centre will look much better with a new tile floor with four shuffleboard courts designed in the flooring. A new heat- ing and air conditioning system will certainly add to the comfort of the hall, especially in the summer. These improvements are the result of a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation. With $100 million in annual funding from the province's charitable gaming initiative, the foundation provides grants to eligi- ble charitable and not-for-profit organizations in the arts, culture, sports, recreation, environment and social services sectors. Carving continues every Wednesday at 9 a.m. throughout the year. The choir practices each Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. and wel- comes new members. Euchre games are played on Tuesdays and Saturdays and are open to all that would like to participate. Bridge is played on Tuesdays at | p.m. so we have a wide variety of activities avdilable to all members. We urge all seniors to join our club and have some fun. The new executive board is in place with Cam Crawford taking over as president, Wayne Burrell as past president, Gord Emmerson - first vice-president, Bill Leslie - second vice-president, Enci Dhanoosingh - treasurer and Joan West - secretary. The club has a group of people that look after the activities throughout the year. We are indebted to all that give of their time to take care of the day to day operations of the Port Perry seniors and wish them well. For information about senior activities call 905-985-7592.
