"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2001 - 3 Department outlines capital priorities Backup generator tops Scugog fire service's wish list By J. Peter Hvidsten Weekend Star Among the most press- ing needs for Scugog's Fire Department is a backup 'power generator for the Port Perry station, Fire Chief Richard Miller told local councillors on Monday. In his capital priorities 'report to the Environmental and Public Safety Issues Committee, the Chief outlined the needs of his department over the next five years. One of- the top priority items noted in his report was a 50-kilowatt backup power generator for Fire Hall No. 1. It comes with a price tag of about $40,000, he told the committee. Chief Miller says that the 'Scugog Fire Department is usually the lead agent in a major dis- aster and power must be maintained in the event of this occurring. When questioning the high cost of the generator, | Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt said it seems that "prices seem to triple as soon as you mention fire department," and won- dered if the department was looking dt the most practical and cost-efficient way of buying one. The Chief replied that the decision as to require- ments required was left up to the experts, who in turn specified the size required to eperate the fire hall in case of emergency. A smaller, but equally important item, the department would like to see is the purchase of an Opticom Traffic Interruption System installed at the intersec- tion of Old Simcoe Rd, and Reach St., as well as at the junction of Queen St. and Hwy. 7A. The system allows an operator to acti- vate green traffic signals in the direction the fire vehi- cles are travelling. This item, which comes at an estimated cost of $8,000, would help improve the fire depart- ment"s response time, said the Chief. The fire department's capital project summary also calls for expenses totalling more than $1 mil- lion over the next five years. Equipment listed in the summary includes two new pumpers, two new utility vans and $300,000 for a fire emergency radio system. Paul Michel chosen to lead ice pad fundraising effort By J. Peter Hvidsten Weekend Star After years of delays, it finally looks as if a serious attempt at fundraising for the second ice pad at Scugog Arena is about to get under- way. . . In a positive move at the Oct. 16 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee, the committee appoint- ed Ward 5 Councillor Paul Michel as the temporary fundraising chairman and. instructed him to get things started. Councillor Michel was quick to accept the appointment and pledged to organjze a meeting in the very near future for interested par- ties. The 'Critical Path' report, brought forward last week by Parks and Recreation Director Jay Todd out- lined the necessary steps required to meet the projected opening date for the second ice pad, which has been tentatively set for September 2002. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt, while fully supportive of the plan, won- dered if the "Critical Path' was too ambitious in the time allotted. "We need somebody on the com- mittee who has been through major construction of community facilities before. If the public doesn't get behind this we will not meet the September 2002 opening. We need everyone to get involved," the mayor said. Regional Councillor Ken Carruthers appeared less than confi- dent at being able to raise the required funds, suggesting that "fundraising should have started a long time ago." But Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce suggested there were lots of people in the community who want to help out. ~ Durham Regional Police report A large quantity of cash and electronic equipment was taken in a daylight break-and-enter on Scugog Line 8.
