While most of us would probably groan at the thought, for the Brooklin mother it's a dream come true. oo As the owner of Lunchkins, Mrs. Oates- Mallette provides nutri- tious meals for 70 stu- dents from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 at Meadowcrest Public School in Brooklin. "I thought 30 would be my maximum," she says. "But, I sort of cooked up this idea myself, so I can't complain." Starting ~~ Lunchkins came about last spring. "I had heard a lot of complaints from moms about having to make exciting lunches every day," she says. "It was then I thought there was a need, especially in a bussed school. Those kids "have no access for going home for lunch." After discussing her proposal with the School Community Council, 'she was allowed to do an 18- day trial run last May and June. "From Day One the result was unbelievable. It was so successful," Mrs. 'Oates-Mallette says. . The lunches are made in the clean, spacious ~ kitchen at Brooklin United Church. "I couldn't do this ser- vice without the support of the church," she says. "Even when the Health Department saw it they were amazed." In order for the stu- dents to pre-select their foods, menus are sent home with the children a week in advance. At a cost of $3.99 per meal, this includes an entree, dessert and drink. The Brooklin mother strives to give meals with a healthy balance of starch and protein and mostly everything is 7. Cd concocting homemade and fresh. Once or twice a week Mrs. Oates-Mallette tries to introduce a new, excit- ing food. "I spend a lot of time up new menus." She gets a lot of help from her daughters, Emmy, a Grade 3 student and Charlotte, who is in Grade 8. | "They are a great help. They give me a lot of con- structive criticism about the menus." She likes to serve foods that parents would like their children to have, but are unable to pack. For instance, the baked potatoes with all the toppings and maca- roni and cheese have been a hit. Other favourites are the taco salad and assort- ed subs. Dessert is either fresh fruit, a sweet treat, or pudding and drinks are milk, spring water or fruit juice. Having a 40-minute "process and serve" time allotted by the Durham Region Health Department, her hus- band, Phil, often comes in to help pack lunches. in heat retaining containers. At school Charlotte and another Grade 8 student, Erin McNeil, help deliver lunches to the primary classroom. Marilyn Oates-Mallette creates delicious and nut area students three times a week. In case a student for gets his/her lunch, she provides three lunches every day. The SCC also benefits as Mrs. Oates-Mallette extra donates a nickel per lunch to the organization. The profits are small but the rewards are price- less, she says. Every week she ritious meals for Brooklin receives thanks from Principal Lisa Millar and countless students.
