"Before | was walking my mother would always say | would crawl across the floor to see the milk- man's horse or the policeman's mount and call out 'Horsey, Horsey'," she recalls. At school Gubby was forever drawing her favourite subject. "I was always in trouble in math because | would be drawing horses instead of solving problems." In the early 1930s she "really began to paint" after winning a scholarship and began attending classes at the Art Gallery of Ontario. In later years when she was dat- ing David Armour, they would enjoy riding horses together. But, the year before their marriage in 1975, disaster struck when Gubby lost her leg due to a reckless driver. "We were out for a ride and this fool came driving by, too close, and smashed into my leg," she says. "My horse wasn't hurt at all, but my leg was a wreck." Suffering seven compound frac- tures and lying in a hospital bed for almost 12 months, the surgeons spent all that time trying to save her leg, "but after a year of trying to save it they had to amputate," she says. Before the accident Gubby had been a volunteer with CARD (Community Association for Riding for the Disabled). After recovering from her yearlong ordeal she, her- self, began to ride with CARD for her own therapy. One year she was asked to donate eight different cards and hasty notes to CARD. Of course, each scene had a horse on it. That project got her back into painting and she's been doing it ever since. "l initially began to draw and paint Christmas cards for friends," says Mrs. Armour. Fifteen years ago Gubby began painting horses on denim and sweatshirts and canvas. "I did it for fun and it soon turned into a little business," she says. "I get an idea, do a bit of scrib- bling, it could be on anything, even a piece of toilet paper," she says. Her work is now sold at Twice Around Tack in Uxbridge, Baker's Saddlery in Stouffville and The Repeat Rider in Toronto. "Everything is authentic, for instance, a dressage horse would have dressage tack and a barrel rac- ing horse would have different tack - than a pleasure horse." All her cards are made from orig- inal sketches. This remarkable lady is still rid- ing horses today. Every week she makes trips to CGS Farms to ride Remington, or Killer as he is also known. "I just love to ride so much." Living in rural Uxbridge with David, their house is filled with equestrian art. "My artwork of horses has been a wonderful pastime."
