Extra officers will be out on the roads in the Greater Toronto Region for this intensive blitz," said Superintendent Peter Burns. During their campaign, officers pulled over 300 vehicles and inspected 90 of them. Of those, 30 vehicles were found unsafe with defects numbering 56 in total. As a result, police layed a total of 18 safety charges, handed out 57 warnings, and removed 16 vehicles from the road. The O.PP were looking for cars with damaged or no mirrors, broken lights and windshield wipers, bald tires, faulty mufflers and excessive- ly dark window tints. The vehicles that were unsafe for the highway were towed at the owner's expense to the Iroquois Park Recreation Center in Whitby, which is the inspection site for unsafe vehicles. Last year in Durham Region over 200 vehicles were checked and more than 20 charges laid. The O.P.P would like to remind motorists that maintenance of their vehicle is important for their safety travelling on the highways during the winter months when driving conditions mean slippery roads and poor visibility.
