As a result of the province's "85" formu- la, which allowed for teachers whose age and years of service gave them a magic number of 85 at which they could retire, the board has found itself in the unenvi- able position of recruiting and hiring 548 new teachers from a variety of areas, including outside of Canada. Craig Burch, the superintendent for employee relations who is also superin- tendent of education for the Scugog area, told trustées in a report given to the board last Monday that a wide hiring area was set to allow for finding teachers to take the 348 open elementary positions filled as of October 2001 and the 200 secondary posi- tions filled as of the same date. "Boards across the province have expe- rienced this (the 85 factor) phenomenon in varying degrees," Mr. Burch said in the The Township of Scugog 2nd Ice Pad Building The Township of Scugog is seeking individuals interested in assisting the building committee for the 2nd Ice Pad at the Scugog Arena. Mr. Burch said that the growth experi- enced in Durham has also played a factor in the need. As a result of the recruiting program by Mr. Burch and his staff, 34 teachers came to Durham from the United States, || from the United Kingdom, 14 from the Australia-New Zealand area and 11 from other countries. A total of 59 teachers came to Durham from outlying boards in the province and 76 have come from other provinces. A total of 81 per cent of the new hires said that geographical location was the prime consideration in their interest in teaching in Durham. Mr. Burch said in the report that the teacher shortage will continue. "Shortage of certified teachers is expected to continue and, indeed, wors- specialty areas," he said.
