"WEEKEND STAR" Gentlemen turn off your engines please By J. Wally Nesbitt From Comer Five "That's All Folks" In an era when the term 'Extreme' is the predomi- nant adjective for virtually all forms of drama and entertainment, nowhere is this word more appropri- ate than describing a review of the 2001 motor- sports season. The racing world suf- fered through the most extreme qf lows this year with the premature loss of too many of the sport's heroes. The motoring community endured the tragic passing of racing legend Dale Earnhardt and rising star Blaise Alexander from the stock carranks and the untimely deaths of sportscar cham- pions Bob Wollek and Michele Alboreto. And few fans will forget the violent accident that cost popular Champ Car racer Alex Zanardi his legs. Fortunately, these loss- es in this most cruel of sports were somewhat tempered by the good fortune and successes bf others. Drag racers John Force and Kenny Berstein were dominating their chosen divisions on their way to overall titles while Brazilian Gil de Ferran was quietly repeating his championship drive in the CART series. In stories a little closer to home, Mosport International Raceway this year celebrated its 40th anniversary with a full and varied schedule and the largest crowds seen at the venue in many years. Blackstock's Devon Powell and teammate Doug Goad teamed up to challenge for the Grand- Am Cup (formerly the Motorolo Cup) and the Powell Racing team were more than successful, tak- ing six wins (in 10 starts) in the Super Grand Sport division, including a run of five consecutive victories. With this record, the dri- vers of the Powell Racing/Sunoco Corvette not only secured the man- ufacturers championship, but the two pilots became co-champions in the Grand-Am Cup's most senior division. And, of course, Mosport 'Scugog Speedway enjoyed anoth- er successful season. Class winners included Jim Blundell taking the ThunderCar crown while Uxbridge driver Rino Montanari earned the title in the Challenger class. Port Perry's Todd Delisle, after running a selected few Challenger races, fin- ished the season in 11th place overall. Darrin Wrigglesworth repeated his 1999 success, taking the Modified title with area drivers Darren Kearnan and Mike Bassett claiming eighth and 4th spots regpec- tively, both drivers also only running a partial sea- son. In Mosport's final class, it was Orillia's Al Inglis earning the Late Model crown. Scugog Island's father and daugh- ter team of Bill Kendry and Patti Diotte claimed a well-deserved sixth plac- ing in the Late Models while Grant Edwards, run- ning a partial schedule, claimed ninth place. Edwards also earns praise and high marks for his third place, overall, finish in the Ontario Super Latemodel Racing series, chasing OSLR champion Shane Maginnis and run- ner-up Derek Lynch in the title hunt. It's time to close the book on the 'Extreme' rac- ing season of 2001. With this year's highs and lows, we can only anticipate what lays in store for the racing community in 2002. And that schedule will be upon us very soon. Congratulations to motorsports journalist extrodinaire Dan Proudfoot, who decided to take early retirement from the Toronto Sun. Somehow, I suspect Dan, although retired may still be found somewhere around the paddock at some racetrack come spring. On a personal note, Corner Five would like to take the time to thank the "Anns of Mosport." To Mary Ann, Ann, JoAnne and more damned Anns than I'll ever remember, thank you for services ren- dered, I'll be back to mooch for more next year. See you in' the spring, From Corner Five.....
