"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2001 - 11 She decides to call it quits after 31 years Catharine Midgley calls it a career By Heather McCrae Weekend Star After enjoying a secretarial career that has spanned over a 31-year period with the Durham District School Board, Catharine Midgley is now going to retire. In excellent health, Mrs. Midgley thought now was the time to retire while she and her husband, Tom, can enjoy some travel together. She is also looking forward to tackling some hobbies "that have been put on hold until now." A retirement tea is planned for Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 4 p.m. to0.5:30 p.m. at Prince Albert Public School in the library. Mrs. Midgley's career began fresh out of high school in 1959. Having just graduated from Uxbridge Secondary School with a commercial diploma, she was hired by Principal Grant McDonald of Port Perry High School as the only secretary. After marrying her army sweetheart, Tom Midgley, in November 1961 the couple moved to Petawawa where Mrs. Midgley worked for Atomic Energy in Deep River. When the couple returned to Scugog in April 1970, Mrs. Midgley's career with the school board picked up again when she was hired part-time by her mother-in- law, Lillian Midgley, who was also the principal then at Epsom Public School. When the Epsom school twinned with Greenbank Public School, her position became redundant and she was transferred to work part-time at R. H. Cornish. "Working part-time really suited me so I could be there for our daughter, Michelle, as she was growing up," says Mrs. Midgley. In 1978 she was hired full- time, remaining there until she changed schools in May 1995 and moved to Prince Albert. "I always enjoyed working at R. H. Cornish but a change is always good," she says. Changing schools meant other changes, too. Often she would ride her moped to work, "but moving to Prince Albert now meant I didn't have to cross over that busy 7A Highway anymore," she says. There have been many changes in technology, too. Mrs. Midgley's career began with an old standard Underwood typewriter, carbon paper and onion paper and is ending with a computer containing countless WINDOWS AND DOORS WE After a 31-year career with the Durham District School Board, Catharine Midgley has decided to retire. Over these years Mrs. Midgley worked for 10 prin- cipals. Besides Mr. McDonald and Mrs. Midgley she worked for John Hogg, Murray Prentice, Harry Kiezebrink, Peter Dean, Start Todd, Rick DeJong, Marg Hildenbrand and Al Sawtell. "I'll miss the routine - and the children," she says. "Former students that I registered for kindergarten are now starting to register their kids for JK now. I've made a lot of good friends but now it's time to venture into a new chapter of my life - retirement." OPPERS A.
