The main concerns voiced by residents are of fishermen who park wherever they feel like it, leave their garbage behind on public and private property and the general mess that residents wind up with every spring when the snow reveals exactly what all has been left. On the other side are the business owners who derive a strong winter income from the influx of parka-clad fishermen who sit on the frigid lake waiting for a bite. Both must be satisfied in some meaningful way... and both can Suggestions to increase by-law enforcement in no-parking areas should be much more than a suggestion. Tickets for littering and even stronger lake patrols by the Durham Regional Police snowmobile units will help. To help local business owners'spread the message that the right kind of visitors are very welcome to the shores of Lake Scugog... well, a simple pamphlet would do the trick. 'The do's and"don'ts of ice fishing on Lake Scugog'. Produced in a partnership which could include the township and local merchants, it could include not only the rules and by-laws that visitors might need to know but the location of local businesses catering to ice fishermen, places to eat, gas up, local emergency num- bers, facilities and perhaps even coupons that could be used for return trips to Scugog in the summer months. We can let the people who visit know in an informative and nice way that visitors to our home are welcome. But please wipe your feet before entering and leave things as you found them. 4 ! { i i | or, This photo of two-year-old Eric Lauzon was brought into The Star by Jean Ferguson of Port Perry. Craig Burch (of DDSB) told the parents and supporters of Epsom Public School that the closure of the school has nothing to do with education and that our students would likely not benefit from the closure. It seems that the DDSB is no longer in the business of offering our children the best possible educa- tion. If this were the case Epsom would remain open. If Epsom is closed, our children will be our children here? What message are they getting about the importance of their educa-, tion? We do support the expansion of Uxbridge Secondary School and we ask them to support us in our fight to keep Epsom Public School open. We must work together for the benefit of all Durham students today and in the future. Rob and Allison Ashton Epsom Check us out at www.portperrystar,com
