| Star \ Editorial Topics Fire Department Vote With the advent of Fire Prevention Week in Port Perry (Oct. 4-10) it is disheartening to know that the Village will mark the occasion without Harvey Mahaffy at the heim of the fire department. Mr. Mahatfy who has apparently resigned for personal reasons, has served as the Village's chief for the past two years. Before that he served 20-odd years as a volunteer firefighter. In his last year in the post Mr. Mahaffy has been-ill for a period of time but there was never any Goubt about his affection for the department. He will be missed, not only by the Village as a whole, but especially by the men that served under him. The members of the fire department will be meeting this Monday to pick a successof to Mr. Mahaffy. A likely candidate is Deputy-Chief Jack Cook. During Mr. Mahafty's «i has capably handled the reins and it is only f i aochba geen chance to head the department. Others who bal fill the vacancy are the two fire captains: Merv DeNure and Charlies Lown. Should the deputy-chief win a pro- motion it is likely one of these men will succeed him as deputy. We hope the men in the fire department will make a wise choice in picking their leader and that the Port Perry, Reach and Scugog Fire Commission respect this choice. Ahead Of The Game The report from Larry Wright, project manager for Clairson Construction Ltd., that the sewer work is about two weeks ahead of schedule is welcomed news indeed. The sooner the road closing and detour signs are removed the better. We are all looking forward to the day when the backhoes, bulldozers and trucks have gone and the Village is once more its peaceful self. Residents have been patient, as shown by the "amazing" lack of complaints about the roads to Mr. Wright. This has, in part, accounted for the speedup, he says. If this be the case we urge every one to muffle their criticisms a bit longer. That the Village council has co-operated is also meritorous. Without such co-operation a task as large as the sewer project could get bogged down in official haggling. Mr. Wright informs that his crews will soon be ready to tackle the business section, within the next few weeks perhaps. As many have noticed, Queen Street, in this area, is in quite an untidy condition. Sand and dirt is everywhere and some merchants are asking that the street be washed. At other times we would sepport this move wholeheartedly. But now we must question the correct timing of such a request. With the street to be excavated in the very near future we think it wise that any washing be delayed. The money saved could be used to keep Queen in tip-top condition 'efter the sewers are in and the new survace applied. When the construction crews do move into the business section, Queen will have to be closed to ve- hiculaer traffic. And maybe pedestrian traffic too. We hope the latter is not the case.
