Ontario County Council Protest North Areas Be Cut From Region Violent opposition was ex- pressed when Ontario County councilors learned Thursday last week of a Bowmanville Darlington Township propos- al which would cut off the northern sector of the countv and leave an Oshawacentred lakeshore region stretching from Ajax in the west to past Cobourg im the east as the geographical entity fer fut- ure regional government The opposition was stated during talks between coun- cillors and Donald Paterson, principal planner in the Osh- velopment Study, about a county brief on the study's third discussion paper. "If you go for this siag- gestion, you're going to get violent reaction in the county and at Queen's Park," said Edward Oyler reeve of Reach Township, claiming the move would open "a can of worms." "We as a council could never, in any way, go for it," he said. County Warden Robert Timbers said the people in the northern sections of the county would staunchly op awa Area Planning and De- }pose joining another region because they had always iden- tified themselves with the Oshawa-centred region. In such a proposal the war- den's own municipality, Scott Township, would be excluded from a new regional setup in this area. The county's brief made mention of keeping the east- ern boundary of the region "flexible" until another re- gion to the east is established and incorporating the Town- ships of Rama and Mara within the region. Mr. Paterson told county councillors they might want Scugog N (Too late for last week) Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Smith have returned after a trip to New Brunswick and Eastern US. On Mon., Mrs. M. Fralick, Mrs. C. Aldred and Mrs. E. Reader went to the Regional meeting at Columbus. The guest speaker was Rev. Ton- age, a former missionary to China. He suggests people kick the church because of ignorance or wishful think- ews ing. Instead of feeling dis- couraged and depressed we should talk about what has been done by the church. The United Church works in 26 countries. It takes about $8000 to keep a single per- son overseas. His conclusion was that the church must take its place on the growing edge of need. to go on record with a more definitive, documented state- ment on regional boundaries in reaction to the Bowmen. ville - Darlington Township brief of the day before. He said also he had invited official comment from the United Counties Council of Northumberland and Durham in which the two municipali- ties are represented Warden Timbers hinted a special council meeting might be called for councillors to draft a stand on the bound- ary issue. Mr. Paterson told the hear- ing he appreciated the de- sire of councillors to remove the townships of Rama and Mara from the "in-limb»" State they occupied in the recommendations of OA- PADS. The study originally placed the municipalities within the Oshaw-centred region, but stitpulated they would join an Orilliacentred region if one was formed in the future. The county's brief pointed out the townships' long his- torical link with Ontario County and emphasized the cost of acquiring more than 3300 acres of land for re- creation and forestry pur- poses as reasons for their in- clusion in the proposed re- gion.
