DITORIAL PINION JUNE 27 w JULY 4 Is Canada Week From June 27th to July 4th, 1971, Canadians in all provinces will be invited to take part in special festivities to honour Canada Week. Canada Week is @ short period of time set aside to honour our country. This does not mean that the rest of the year we should be indifferent. Quite the contrary! tf Canada Week were someday Canada Year, indeed if @ marked feeling of national pride expressed itself on a year-round basis through efforts towards unity and bro- therhood on the part of all Canadians, a special week would mot be necessary. Canada Week hopes to re- kindle the spirit of patriotism that seems today to have been pushed aside. Our national holiday, July 1st, is the focal point of our celebrations. We must not forget its significance. On July 1st, 1867, Canada was born out of the union of Quebec and Ontario with New Brunswick and Nova Sco- tia. Within a few years the country stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Created to withstand political dominatién from the outside and to fully develop its of the highest standards of living in the world. We have now reached a point in our history where many of us seem to take for granted all that Canada has given us. Some people express their discontent by preach- ing secession from or disassociation with the central government. They fail to realize that the success of Canada today is due to its ability as a large power to overcome many of the difficulties which inhibit the growth of smailer countries. We enjoy an enviable repu- tation in foreign affairs. Canada is often called upon to act as arbiter in international disputes, and its peace- keeping forces have done much to pacify some of the world's trouble-spots. The Canadian Passport is more respected than that of any other country. In short, it is thanks to a federal system of gov- ernment that this country has progressed and achieved international respect. Canada Week has a definite purpose. We went Canadians to take special notice of their homeland, of their liberty, of their cultural and linguistic diversity and the temendous potential ahead, No doubt, there is much room for improvement and we hope Canada Week will provide the incentive for thought about assuring that we all benefit from its advantages and from its future. To dispe! indifference and promote understanding amongst all Canadians is our goal, not only during Can- ada Week but all year.
